Self medicating safely.

Hi everyone, I was diagnosed last April with microscopic colitis/crohns. After suffering an extreme flareup, I was admitted to hospital where I was put on budesonide, this worked and within a few days I was on the road to recovery. I have had two gastroenterology app'ts since then, and my doctor is happy for me not to see him for another year. I am coping well with colitis, but am fearful of another serious flareup. I do have some left over budesonide, if I fear a flareup is imminent, can I take them and put myself on a short course? He told me to take them if I need them, but I forgot to ask him if it has to be for a full 3 months. I was wondering if they would work for moderate flare up, say take 3 a day for two weeks, then 2 for 1 week and so forth. Maybe they wouldn't work over a short period of time, I just don't know. I would appreciate any advice. Thank you all.

Not able to say anything as knowledge not enough, you can always contact a consultant via his secretary, for advice.

Any idea why you weren't put on regular maintenance meds ? Most of us with colitis will be on permanent anti inflammatories at least.

Your plan to have them on hand if needed is great, nice your doctor looks out for you this way. You can always start taking them as directed and Although you don’t have an appointment soon, you can always reach out to your gastros office if you go into a flare. They can direct you on whether they need to see you to issue you another script.

I'm not sure Bantam12, I have heard it's possible to take one budesonide daily, and i would be happy to do that. I am going to the loo more often last couple of days, so might phone ibd nurse to see if I can take one capsule or have to start off again on three and work down to one. Thank you all so much for your replies.
