Sore Knees brought me to my ...

Hi all,

up until a few weeks ago all was progressing well, then I started getting sore knees. I have had a break of 10 days before re-trying W6r3 but my knees get so sore about 1/2 way through that I had to give up.

I've been cycling instead for the last few days, with no issues. So I've decided a visit to my GP is now in order as I really want to finish c25k.

I am booked into the Water Wipeout XRunner event on 23rd June and need to be fit for that.

I'll let you know when I'm running again and thank you for all your support so far.

Good luck with your running :-)

Thanks Shelley, the cycling is definitely helping, I've lost 18 pounds so far, at roughly 2 pounds a week, so I'm very happy with that :-)

Knees are such a nuisance aren't they. I've just got a jumper's knee strap and am going to see if it helps to stop my knees aching, not that they are as bad as yours sound. The cycling is good and at least you get to free wheel on the downhills :) Hope the knees improve.

Yes knees are a right royal pain. Let me know if your jumper's knee strap helps.

I've got properly fitted running trainers, but have also tried new insoles (I have flat feet), not really sure whether they are actually helping or not. I've also tried 10 days rest and several runner's knee stretching exercises, but it doesn't seem to make any difference, hence why I'm now going to the docs.

I'm just glad the cycling is ok, as at least I'm still getting fitter and losing the excess weight :-) (18lbs down, 22lbs to go)

I'll let you know how the strap works but not running until tomorrow. One of my daughters has her knee drained every now and then when she is in severe pain, something to do with her cartilage and then she is ok again. I'm not saying you have anything serious but it is always a good idea to get your knees checked out if you have persistent pain so a trip to the GP, as you have planned, is a good idea. Is there a doc at your practice that is into running?

Well done on the weight loss, I must get weighed sometime to see if I've lost any.

I thought I would let you know how I got on with the jumpers knee strap. I wore a strap on my right leg, just below the knee to do my zumba class on Wednesday evening and the next morning I noticed that only my left knee ached on the way downstairs. On Thursday I ran with the strap on my right leg and can't say it felt any different while running, The first 5 to 10 minutes was a bit achey and then it was ok, that's usual for me but this morning once again it was only my left knee that ached on the way downstairs. That makes it sound as if the strap is working. I had a different one delivered today so I will try running with both straps next to see how that goes.

Thank you very much for the update. It sounds like you may very well be onto something. I haven't managed to get to my Doctors yet, I'm hoping to get an appointment sometime this coming week. The cycling has been going well - managed to ride at least 6 hilly miles every day for the last 9 days with 12 hilly miles on one day and 16 flat miles on another. I'm hoping that this is also strengthening the muscles around my knees.

All the best :-)

Glad the cycling is going well so at least you can still exercise. Well done on the weight loss! :)

Thanks for your support - just got back from a 6 mile cycle (another 398 calories burnt) got hailed on, which wasn't pleasant, but then the sun came out and dried me off before I got home :-)

Hi Tricky

Just wondered how you got on at the doc? I am really suffering with knees and haven't dared run after graduating a week ago.

Just searched the forum for knee problems and seen your posts.

Hi BTX4,

Sorry to say haven't been to the docs yet, I've switched to other forms of exercise at the minute, I'm doing Gillian Michaels 30 day shred at the minute (1st day today).

I'm thinking that I'll give running another try after a longer break, so maybe try a run Wednesday/Thursday this week and see how I get on. If I still hit the same problem I'll go to the docs.

Let me know how you get on. I am booked for the doc on Thursday but have self diagnosed patellofermoral pain syndrome!

I am desperate to continue running and just want someone to wave a magic wand and tell me it will all be ok.

Meanwhile on with the exercises :)
