I have been told by a nurse I should try swimming instead of running because I am a bit plump. I have decided to heed caution to the wind and do running instead as that is free! Hehe

Wekcome to the forum! We’d never advise people to ignore the advice of a health professional, but I think it’s fair to say that not all of them are up to date on the latest developments in running and health. It’s absolutely worth speaking to someone else, or asking the nurse what evidence her judgement is based upon and if she can help you understand why she thinks you shouldn’t be running. Often, physios who work with runners are great for this sort of help and support to keep (or start!) running if that’s important to you.
It’s totally up to you, but I think I’ve got a responsibility as an admin here to say it’s best to listen to the medical advice you’ve been given until you can talk to someone else about your personal circumstances. I know that might be frustrating to hear. Good luck with getting a second opinion.
I've had to take a week off- I was running every other day and then when I got to 25 minutes I got Runner's knee. I was in agony and could barely walk and it really demoralised me.
It was so painful, but a "proper" (less rotund) runner told me just to rest it for three or four days then try again. A week later and I am back on the horse (though suddenly realised I'm know in week 8 and the runs have extended to 28 minutes!).
I've not managed to shift any weight, but my Blood pressure has droppped remarkably so something must be going right

Japanese slow jogging is less challenging on the knees if you fancy trying that technique. Sorry I'm useless at adding links, but if you google it, there's a little youtube video.

It's terrific that you are thinking about taking on a new challenge, but do listen to your health care provider for the time being. But do seek out that second opinion.
Your nurse may see something that you don't at this time.
Best...
