“Experiencing anxiety from time to time can simply be part of the human experience, but you don’t have to accept it as inevitable. You may be able to alleviate some of your symptoms by going for a run”.

Runner's World

Good afternoon, running people...

Here I am again.. and today... I, and perhaps some, of you are about to think about starting a new running route... or incorporating it, into your running plans.

Because C25K is a very structured plan to get folk running for 30 minutes in nine weeks...I am going to be posting regular posts, about this, on the Strength and Flex Forum...

... because this new route is all about how to get back running, but... with an old friend of mine...anxiety :) Not the best companion to have with you...but hopefully, one that will fall by the wayside as I move along :)

I do know from reading all the posts here, that there are quite a few folk running with anxiety or stress, or even trying to use their running to escape it...Something I did during the pandemic... much to my cost! So maybe I will not be totally alone :)

I am going to be looking at the positive ways I can move forward and the strategies that may be available to help me do that ! I do have a few in my running gear drawer already! I hope it will incorporate exercises for both body and mind and a whole load of the usual Oldfloss rambling thoughts too!

So... If you think it may be something or some aspects of this that may be useful to you...then pop into the S and F Forum tomorrow and take a peek...you don't have to comment or reply if you don't feel like it... I am going to be posting anyway, because it will keep me on track . I intend to get back to running, even if it takes a while... :)

P.S

Mr OF took his first short walk today...it went well and we beat the rain home too x

UPDATE

I absolutely love love love this idea! I’ve really had to battle to find ways to not totally psych myself out at the start of longer runs and how to run through all the doubts about whether I’m up to it or not. It is such an important part of running and I’m so pleased you’re doing it! You’re always really thoughtful and helpful in the way you share what’s working for you.

Can’t wait for the posts ❤️❤️❤️

I will be definately be taking a peek Floss, your wisdom and rambles are just what I need right now too.

I feel just on the edge of beginning to run again, my thoughts have been wandering that way, and I know you have the tools to help with the transition!

Time for me is short, as I imagine it is for you, so maybe with a little incentive I will find a way back into my running shoes....

See you in S and F.🙋‍♀️

One day and step at a time for MrOF, with you by his side.

💜xxx

Hello.... This is such good news.....getting back to the running will be so good for you, in oh, so many ways...You have had your fair share of worry and yet have always been there for me and so many... x

I think it may be more rambling than wisdom, right now.... but we will give it a go...I shall look forward to seeing you there...we miss the runs.... they wait....but I think they are more patient than we...

Yes., we had our walk... and it went okay...two laps of the Close tomorrow :) Thanks my friend xxx

All thoughts are with you both. If Mr OF has even half your determination and strength, then he'll be just fine too 🥰

Oldfloss profile image
OldflossAdministratorGraduate in reply to linda9389

He is stubborn.... does that count...? But gosh, he can make it tricky! I've had to hide the vacuum cleaner.... and lock the gate so he cannot attempt to move the refuse bins !!! Seriously though, thank you so much...he is strong and by the endo of this week I feel sure he will feel less vulnerable.... and more confident... xxx

Haha. Determination is a nice way of saying stubborn isn't it? 😍

Looking forward to reading on S&F. I have a feeling that for us runners it can be extra hard on our mind, when we are unable to run, and thus loose that natural endorphin feel-good sense.

And when then life throws us some considerable curves, we have one less tool to deal with that.

So it’s good, I think, to focus on being mindful of the conscious act of being extra mindFUL.

Sending you and MrOF lots of peacefulness, healing and looking forward to your mindful rambles.

😘🙏🧘🏻😌🏞️🥾🥾

Oh, and I think that little suitcase (even though it’s labelled “anxiety”) looks so cute in the pic! 👏

Thank you so, so much that means a great deal, to us both.

I shall be raiding your files too, for past posts and exercises if that is okay with you?

Anxiety is an uncomfortable friend, most of us carry it along with us, and mostly we can shed at least some if it on a run or even a walk. Pleased to hear Mr. OF had a walk, good progress.

Just so.... and that is what I intend to do :) Thank you... he is progressing but not the easiest of patients,,, or patience:) x

🍏🤗🤗A double hug..one for all you & Mr OF have been through and one because it’s so good to have you and your rambles back! Looking forward to heading over to S&F later .. I will follow the snail …. Love that photo … anxiety contained in a suitcase 🧳… can we leave it behind.. or carry it with us….I am sure your key to that case, will reveal all in due course! 🤓 xx

Thank you for your post, wishing you and Mr OF well. I’ve not been able to keep in touch with this forum or kept running much lately, for many reasons but will watch your posts with interest and I’m sure it will also help to motivate me, so thank you!

I have clicked the like button Oldfloss although having been in this situation myself more than once, I am only too aware that there is very little to like about it.

I'm currently signed off work again with acute sinusitis and long covid, although I strongly suspect a lot of this is actually underlying stress with a good dollop of anxiety thrown in, so I look forward to your posts and will follow, as ever, with great interest.

I'm back at my day job a week on Monday (unless I get signed off again) and, frankly, I am already absolutely dreading it. I'm becoming increasingly unhappy - I've been there almost 16 years now and what I do now bears absolutely no resemblance to what I was originally employed to do. I'm starting to explore options and trying to work out if I can somehow earn enough income from my holistic work to be able to finish with the charity that I work for, but we shall see...........

Good to hear from you albeit, with the unhappy place you find yourself in at work x

Gosh, the thought of heading back to that must feel horrid. The fact that you have had such a tiring and wearing, combination of illness too, is so draining. I am sure you would have to be superhuman not to let the current situation, impact you in stress terms.

Hopefully things will work out and you may be able to work out a solution. But until then, stick around and we will try, together, with a few friends to move forward... x

Oh yes, I need this! My Gremlin keeps telling me what I can't do, what I haven't achieved yet, how far behind I am. Well, Gremlin, I'm taking you out (kicking and screaming, no doubt) for a run right now! I'll tell you at the start it only needs to be 10 mins....and hopefully after 10 mins you'll be starting to enjoy the scenery and let me carry on a bit longer. Is that a deal?!

BR808 profile image

Are we related?! 🤣😂🤣😂well maybe some of our gremlins are!

FriendofRondo profile image
FriendofRondoGraduate

I can happily report that Gremlin got distracted along the way and let me do a full 30 mins of running! I'm feeling good......Gremlin is hopefully now in a corner sulking.... 😀
