A story that hit home

As its rather warm at the moment so a couple of us from our running group decided to go out early this morning while it was still cool (ish). I met up with my running pal and we set off.

I am still amazed at the transformation my friend has made since when we originally started the C25K plan. Of all our group, she has definitely made the biggest change to her weight and fitness. When we started she had a BMI of over 27 but it is now under 20. She can also out run the rest of us on distance, although running with her, I do manage to go further than when running alone as she keeps us at an even pace.

Until the weather got warm, she had done most of her runs in the evening. She admits she used to be an avid soap watcher but gave that up and prefers running instead.

She was telling me today about one of the soap characters who had lost a lot of weight and that he had recently been on other programs talking about his weight loss and how he now loves running. He has just released YouTube video about his transformation and said I must watch it. She said that a lot of it she could definitely empathise with (other than ginger hair) and that the one point that really stood out and hit home with her was that he said that although he had lost a lot of weight, inside, he still thought of himself as the 'fat kid'.

My friend said, she has lost weight, changed her diet completely and bought a complete new wardrobe but has not adjusted her thinking. She said before, if she was in a public gathering where there were groups of people, she would tend to mix with those that were over-weight and felt self conscious about mixing with 'thin' people. She finds it hard to get over those tendencies.

I watched the video today and it is very inspiring.

My friend has always seemed quite self confident but she says that if she wasn't like that she would have just hidden in the corner. The video is well worth watching.

This is brilliant! Thanks for sharing it xxx

Massive congratulations to your friend - and to Colston Smith! I hope they both find the complete lifestyle and mindset changes they are looking for 🤩

Look after her.... BMI is an imperfect measure but thinking of yourself as 'fat' at a BMI of 27 and going under 20 is a bit interesting. It may all be spot on for her frame and she may psychologically be in a contented place.... but look after her.

Thanks, we all do look out for each other in our group as we are now all such good friends.

She had a BMI of 27 when she started C25K but apparently has been a lot bigger. She has said that until she started the C25K and running with our group, she had never been able to stick to diets for longer than a few weeks. She said that she would see clothes that she likes, but when she tried them on they didn't quite look the same on her and so dieted to lose a few pounds. She would lose a bit of weight then relax the diet a bit, and sometimes ended up putting on more weight than she lost. She had quite an array of clothes sizes in her wardrobe.

As with all of our group, she has changed her lifestyle rather than just her diet. She used to cook for the rest of her family then eat something different herself that fitted the diet she was on at the time. Now all the family eat the same, except now more healthy food.

Not too long ago, her husband got her to throw away all her ill-fitting cloths and buy new (which amounted to just about everything she owned).

She had said that she used to feel self-conscious about her weight and when out at gatherings she avoided contact with people that were wearing the sorts of clothes that she would love to be able to wear but that didn't suit her shape. She said she felt 'frumpy' in the clothes that she wore and felt others looked down on her because of it. Now that she can, and does wear the styles she likes (and does look amazing in them) she says it is hard to put behind her the fears she had about people judging her on he weight.

My comment to her was that if there are people that judged her purely by her clothes and not her personality then they were probably not worth mixing with in the first place. But, I think it was more how she thought people perceived her rather than how they actually did.

She is one of those people that brings a room alive and is usually to blame when our group are collapsing with laughter at something she has said or done. We all love her.
