Started C25K last summer and completed it. I was sooo chuffed! I found it hard but I didn’t give up.
Winter came, the cold air and wind was hard to contend with and I found it hard going again. I persevered and got to a stage of managing 5K every other day.
Spring sprung and that did me in! Pollen!! From February onwards the tree pollen was so intense that I was only able to run for around 8 mins. I was devastated.
Doctor sent me for chest X-ray and bloods which came back clear thank goodness. Asthma nurse has given me a pink inhaler and it’s been my saviour. Two puffs morning and night & I can run again - albeit indoors at the gym now but I’m back running and therefore very pleased.
If, like me you find yourself struggling but have no idea why, get in touch with your doctor. It might be exercise induced asthma and it can be treated.

Damn pollen! Hayfever and asthma combo here too but inhalers have it under control and I just try to avoid running near freshly cut grass! Hopefully you won't be confined to the gym for the whole summer, unless you prefer it! Doesn't tree pollen drop down soon enough..June maybe? And then grass pollen rises🤦♀️😅
At almost 47 I've lived with chronic asthma all my life, had a few life threatening attacks. After making some better lifestyle choices my asthma has been relatively under control. C25K has given me a new boost, although only just completed W2R3. Started off outside but I found it such a struggle to control my breathing. Always finished off panting/gasping (yes even at a slow pace). W2RI made the decision to try the treadmill at home and it has made a huge difference to the outcome for me. The last thing I wanted was to give up! So I'm sticking to indoors for now 🤔
You might feel you have more lung capacity as you progress through the program. I'm not sure when I felt a real difference but my lungs stopped burning when running and I can go the full 30mins slowly no problems. I always carry my inhaler just in case, but haven't needed it.
Well done. Stick with it. Compare yourself to no one. Running is such a personal individual thing. We’re all so different so just having the determination to start running in the first place is a brilliant, brilliant achievement. I really like the treadmill/ gym environment now as I’m actually a bit fearful of the outdoor running which induces the allergies and asthma.
Oh ya I am very happy with slow jogging, and just so pleased to be physically able to run for that length when I was completly out of breath and puffing on my inhaler after 30 seconds running before!! I really didn't think my lungs were up to it but they have responded so well. Hopefully you'll feel it too!
