High Heart Rate??

I have taken some time off due to injury and a stomach bug so have decided to re do week 6 run 1 a few times over two weeks to get back into it. Have mixed it with strength trg and some fartlek trg but today when running the last leg of the round my heart rate was very high.

I am 52, so broadly my max HR should be 168. I have set my garmin at 170, but at one point today, for around a min I was at 175. Should I be worried? I am nervous as although I felt fine, I cannot see how I can run any slower?

It was on an uphill section, but not that steep. Any advice welcome, and thank you all in advance.

Am due to run fartlek on Wednesday and then re run W6 R1 on Friday, going back into schedule next week.

The formulae used for calculating max HR are somewhat crude and only return averages. By definition most people are not average.

Without ascertaining your actual, as opposed to theoretical max HR, the zones are only guides and many people fall well beyond the averages, but obviously only those who appear to be exceeding the zones get concerned.

If you feel okay and recover quickly, then you are probably fine.

An easy conversational pace equates to approximately 75% of your maximum heart rate, which is the perfect zone to build the solid aerobic base required to run faster and further, which is why it is the pace at which elite athletes spend up to 80% of their training time.

You don't need any tech to identify that.

:-) thank you for that. Recovered well, so no issues there, was just nervous as new to fitness and didnt want to blow it all with another injury....

Will try and slow down, but find a pace of around 140 - 145 spm to be most comfortable.

Can you speak aloud, clear, ungasping sentences as you run?.........if not, you are going too fast.

I'm 51, soon to be 52, and the formulæ get it wrong for me too.

160bpm is in the "I'm working but I'm hardly breaking a sweat" territory for me.
