So. I have hit the dreaded shin splints.
What I thought were cramps whilst running, actually seem to have manifested into shin splints so I'm going to do the recommended thing and take a week off +. I have ibuprofen, compression socks, ice packs etc, and I'll try and rest up as much as possible. It doesn't hurt that much, but I think it's worth being overly cautious with this.
One thing no one said is that shin splints can feel like cramps, but through some research, it seems that this is the case for some people. Really annoyed at myself as I pushed through the cramps but really I should have just stopped and walked home.
I'm also going to analyse my running style, as looking through sources for about 4 hours has shown me that there are several contributing factors, running style being one of them. I have proper running shoes with bespoke insoles moulded to my feet so feel like I can't blame that, I do run on hard road surfaces but try to avoid camber as much as possible. I also have been following the plan the last few weeks but tbh, this is likely because I am a new runner and my body doesn't have the knack of this yet.
So I'll be back in a week or so, but yes going to rest up completely and then try altering my running style to reduce any further injury.
