Week 9 - it's not worked out so well...

I've been unwell, finally got to Dr's and given antibiotics last week for an abscess...

Managed to complete week 8 run 3 last Saturday and felt great. But started to feel unwell for a few days so took time out. Tried week 9 run 1 yesterday and had to stop after 15 mins in pain, my stomach hasn't been right on the antibiotics I think.

I am booked in for a 5k event tomorrow - which I'd planned to be graduated by this point... The first half is up a hill and I've only done 1 Park run on the flat...

I know the sensible thing is probably not to push myself tomorrow to do the run, but I'm pretty disappointed in myself.

Cheer me up please!

Oh I am so so sorry to hear you have been so poorly. 🙁 Antibiotics can make you feel quite unwell, too. Rest is the best cure for infection of any type, it truly is. If it were me, I would skip the event...but I do totally understand how disappointing this would be. But - you are a runner now, and there will be other 5k events you can do - hundreds of them! All the best runners have had to pull out of some event because of sickness or injury. Focus on getting well ... and book your next event I say. Get well soon. x

You have done really well but obviously not quite right yet for longer runs. 5k events are fun, treat it as a fun day out and challenge yourself to enjoy it by part walk, part run, loads of others will be walking, some may even be choosing to walk the whole way. Chat to those around you and spread happiness. Enjoy

Maybe look at it this way.....

You most likely started running to help your body, right now your body is telling you you need to use your energy to fight this infection. It’s done all that hard work to get you to week 9, maybe you owe it to it to give it the opportunity to fight off the infection for just a bit longer.

The way I see it, running is a kind of teamwork between your physical and mental sides - they push each other onwards. Sometimes when the physical side breaks, the mental side really has to work harder to overcome its frustration (this makes me laugh as it’s usually the mental side letting me down so it shouldn’t be so stroppy when the other side breaks 😂).

Don’t be disappointed in yourself, this one is beyond your control and deep down you know if you miss this park run target it’s for the best and you’ll be signing up for another in no time! 😃 🏃‍♀️

What a bummer, I'm not surprised you're feeling disappointed but then don't. Look what you've already achieved so far, getting to the end of Week 8 is no easy feat (I typed that with a strong feeling of awe, I'm due to start W4 tomorrow!) As DrEF has said above, what has happened is out of your control, but I think that you need to show thanks to your body, for getting you to where you are so far, by easing back and resting, so that this abscess can heal. You will have plenty of opportunities for park runs once you're recovered and I bet finishing the first one will also feel a great achievement. I'm concerned that if you try the one this weekend you'll feel even more peeved because you couldn't give it your all. I wish a speedy recovery to you and a speedy return to C25K.
