Cross trainers are good pieces of kit and if used correctly can lead to weight loss and muscle growth.
I've used them a few times, I'm not personally over fond of them but it is each to their own.
When it comes to buying or renting one that is really only a choice you can make. I'm not sure on what the rental would be on a cross trainer but I have bought treadmills from JTX Fitness and their equipment is very good and very well built. They do a range of Cross Trainers, starting at £325 or from £24 per month to buy it on HP.
Their delivery includes sighting it in a ground floor room of your choice, I think there may be an assembly option as a chargeable extra but can't honestly remember.
