I’m on a rest day today but want to do some sort of exercise is it okay to do weight training at the gym or is this counter productive as the whole point of a rest day is to rest legs?

Your weight training will be ok. It's just not good to run on a rest day 😊
I was wondering about this, too. Doesn't weight training cause microtears in your muscles as well which is the same as running?
I'm gonna trust Buddy34 on this and order my self a barbell/dumbell set from Argos.
