I’ve tried running really slow at the start of a run to save energy for later on, but find it really hard work. As soon as I up my pace slightly it feels much better should I forget trying to have a slow start and just go for what feels natural and just slow as I go and run low on energy?

I am tempted to say do what works for you. If at your happy pace you can carry on a conversation and you are not getting aches and pains, I would think it's fine. Some people finish having run 5k in 30 mins, some don't.
Run as you wish to, it does vary a lot with different runners, many do start off slowly and gradually increase pace during their run, others try to keep the same pace throughout the run, I looked at the 5K split time of a recent 10K run, some runners ran the first 5K quicker than the second, some the other way round and there were some of whom the pace of both halves were about the same.
I always seem to really struggle with the first 1k or so. So I’ve tried more warm up less warm up slowing the pace or a comfortable pace it’s always the worst bit.
I’m no help! I always set off like a rocket and have to rein myself in before I drop! Every time. With or without my watch pacing me. With or without other runners nearby. Every time!!
