It may have been asked many times before, but what is the view on men shaving their legs? We have masses of ticks on Dartmoor, and hair seems to act as a scaffolding access platform for them to climb higher!
Do many chaps shave their legs? Does it make a difference, or is it serious-runner vanity?
If it does work - how high do you go before you stop?
I used to when I walked regularly in the new forest, for same reason you have mentioned. Haven’t done so for year. I do picture a runner with shaved legs, not sure if that’s because there are a lot of them or just that they stick in the mind more because they’re unusual. I went all the way up as I looked pretty silly naked with top half hairy, so the top half was pure vanity.
Well, I look odd naked anyway, so that isn't a problem!! I shall chat to 'er indoors first before I even consider it. I did it once when I was cycling a lot for road-rash treatments and massage, but not for ticks.
As a Scout leader in a former life, I have removed ticks from the arms and legs before, but our son managed to get one in a slightly more 'unusual' position - one that if a Scout had one there I would take them to the doctors!
I can see where you are coming from, but I nearly always wear short-shorts when running. I love the air on my legs when I am running, cycling or walking amongst the glens, fells, dales, moors or along the coast - but I don't like ticks!
Tried insect repellent and it doesn't work. I have also tried eating garlic and Marmite and that didn't work either. All DEET ever did was to help me leave fingerprints in my camera's plastics.
The Mrs doesn't seem to attract things other than horse flies, but I am a magnet - she wishes I was a magnate!
Try Avon Skin So Soft. It contains citronella and certainly works for me against the dreaded midgie. If it doesn’t deter ticks, at least you’ll have lovely soft skin - albeit covered in angry red lumps!
You can get it direct from Avon online. I think Amazon sell it too, but more pricey there. I bought 7 bottles for me and some of my walking group in the summer from Avon. It was £1.99 a bottle then.
More and more men are coming in for waxing services from head to toe and everything inbetween - and i mean EVERYTHING! I think its a great thing that guys are looking after themselves and its not just gay men - this is a misconception! I get guys of all ages coming in a little sheepish and they tell me that, that is a reason they feel conscious of having a treatment. Once theyve been in, they love it, and the reasons vary from personal hygiene to sports related to partners preference. So i say go for it as it can help against chaffing or if you feel weird, start by trimming them short first !
I've heard tell of such shenanigans going on, but I've never known anyone have it done. I did hear that a comedian [I can't think of his name] having his behind done before a big charity bike ride, but I wasn't sure if he was being serious or not. You can't tell with that lot!
I'm not sure the Mrs would be too impressed if I had an all over jobby. I could run the idea of legs past her though... watch this space, and listen for the screams.
