I've recently been able to monitor my heart rate. My maximum heart rate for my age is 147bpm. A short run at pace of 5.5 min/km was 247bpm peek. Am I in danger of a heart attack.

If your resting pulse is max 147bpm I’d get it checked out with either the Gp or practice nurse 👍🏻

Hi. My heart rate at rest is 50bpm. 147bpm is the maximum rate for my age while exercising. My usual average while running is 150bpm. What I did on this accasion was to push a little harder, hence the worrying high rate.

If your concerned get it checked. It will put your mind at rest at least. As for 50bpm, your obviously a true athlete!! Good luck with what ever you decide 👍🏻

50 is really good, interviewed after winning this year's Tour de France, Geraint Thomas was asked 'what is your resting heart rate' he replied '47 bpm', now he is a top athlete at cycling. Before I took up C25K and running I measured my resting heart rate, it was 63bpm, after I graduated I measured it once again, this time it was 56 bpm. I don't know what mine is when running as a don't have whatever the equipment is to measure it.

That’s too many variables to give any meaningful advice.

Obviously the HR reading (max) is wrong. What technology are you using, and how long have you had the device?

Obviously the ‘max heart rate for age’ approximation is not terribly scientific, and is not accurate at the ‘older’ end of the spectrum. I take it you are 73?

Clearly, whilst running a 5’30” pace you’ve exerted yourself. But whether that is sensible for you, I’m not in a position to advise. Go talk to your GP.

Hi MarkyD. A tomtom runner2 is the device. I didn't feel any different. I think perhaps it's best not to take the readings as Gospel. 247bpm is, I would think, if it is correct, close to fibrillation!! Your correct with may age. I am getting on a bit.

Technology is great when it’s accurate. As MarkyD said,to many variables. The only one that can answer your question is a medic. Go get it sorted 👍🏻

The only accurate way to see if your HR does get to that point, and for how long, would be an exercise tolerance test.

If you are worried consider asking your GP for advice.

The HR monitors such as fitbit aren't wonderfully accurate, and you may find yourself dwelling on something you had previously never given any thought to.

Did you feel ok during that run?

Get reassurance from your Dr, as I suspect you won't feel reassured until you do.

Personally I got rid of my fitbit!

The max HR for your age is not 147............that is an average estimated using a fairly crude formula. Your max HR is obviously higher. The 247bpm sounds like a misreading or tech failure. If you actually are at 247, then your GP should be consulted, injury opinion.
