Run in the sun...

Well, well, well....this morning’s run was less than an accomplishment, more of a pull your sweaty, red faced, unable, sorry carcass round the park...but only managed 2.8k in 23 mins...well, that’s absolutely pants, I couldn’t keep running for more than 8 minutes at a time...I thought I was a ‘proper runner’ who would be able to run in all weathers & just keep on going?? These are the kind of runs that make me think I’m kidding myself...and should I try again tomorrow seeing as I have hardly run anywhere??!! Or even this evening when it’s cooled down a bit?? And there’s me helping my friend to do something I can’t always do myself!!! I take my (Sun) hat off to anyone who can run in all weathers...or lives in a sunnier place...I’m hoping it comes with practice?! What if I lived in a warm country & had no choice???

On the other hand...its further than I ran on the 8th May last year..

I am not sleeping very well at the moment so that might have something to do with it...who knows? There was a fella running in the park too, he was just springing along, like it was a natural way to get around!! That made me feel worse so thats when I stopped...oh well, tomorrow’s another day

Happy running everyone

MC x

Hey Mummycav fret-ye-not! Some runs are just like that. Running in the heat is really hard. I didn't run yesterday, it was a rest day anyway, though I did plan a naughty evening run which obviously I would never have done because it would have been naughty :P I went walking instead with some friends, we did about 5-6 miles and I was an exhausted, sweaty mess by the end. The fact you managed to run at all is great.

I know you're a runner, you know you're a runner, plus you're a great inspiration to me personally, and I'm quite sure you'll be back to your usual form for the next run. Loads of things could have affected it, heat, hydration, tiredness, mood, all of which affect my running, I know.

So - don't beat yourself up, you're awesome :) Rather than focus on this last run, focus on how far you've come, and how brilliantly you're doing. Sending hugs your way!

I think you did a brilliant job in this heat!

I think that when hot, minutes should be applied in dog years, so 28 minutes could easily be 45 minutes, or an hour and a half, depending on whether you are a Jack Russell, or a Great Dane.🐕🐅🤗

Mummycav profile image
MummycavAdministratorGraduate in reply toJell6

Ha ha...I felt like a ‘not so’ Great Dane this morning!! Big & heavy, with 2 concrete legs instead of 4 elegant prancing ones!! But I shall count the kms in dog years...thank you Jell6 😉

I think everyone is struggling with the heat. Carrying water and running in shorts and t-shirt only is essential though. I figure if you lived in a hot country you'd learn/acclimatize to deal with it and as they say only mad dogs and Englishmen run in the noonday sun hehe

Mummycav profile image
MummycavAdministratorGraduate in reply topinkaardvark

True...climatizing is the key! I had long pants on too...might have to go on a shopping spree (retailer therapy) this aft for some running shorts & vests...LOOK OUT BRIGHOUSE!!! Ha ha..thank you pinkaardvark x

I'd be invoking awful concepts at this point like "chafing"/"vaseline"/"commando". 😂

Aaah Mummycav, please don't feel glum...re-read your post...

You aren't sleeping well, you ran/walked for 23 minutes of exercise in the hot sun and covered 2.8k.

Its not fun or easy trying to run in full sun, better to go in the evening once the heat is out of the day, or really early am if you are able.

You have done your running for today, no more needed, and its a rest day for you tomorrow....

Irish John wrote a super post yesterday all about this 'I'm not good enough' feeling, I will find it and link it in here...

*just looked and you see that you read Irish Johns post... 'je suis desolee.' and replied..Have another look...😊x

Of course you are a proper runner, and the perfect training partner for your friend and your son. Please don't be so hard on yourself, it is just a very hot day, and yet you still ran. That says a lot about you 😊xxx

Awww Bluebirdrunner , you always say the right things...my halo has slipped this morning, i have so many kind friends on here telling me that I’m an inspiration & that I’m doing well then I have a dodgy run...I think I’m feeling a bit down at the moment, I’m always like this at this time of year when the kids have had another birthday (another year gone) & the summer holidays are fast approaching (another school year gone, kids growing up too fast 😰) the summer holidays are bitter sweet for me, I love them & we disappear to France on our annual road trip but I hate them because they’re all up another school year...it keeps me awake at night, so I haven’t slept for weeks really.....these are no excuses though because everyone has something going on...thank you, I will try again on Wed....evening!!! X

((Hug)) xxx run for fun...not because it's another thing you 'have to do'...x

Take care..not getting proper sleep for weeks makes you very low...xxx

Running in the heat is an absolute killer. Last time I tried going when it was hot I only managed 3.5k.

Mummycav profile image
MummycavAdministratorGraduate in reply toMikeJones68

It was def a killer for me this morning...when I’m walking home & I’m not out of breath or anything, just my head pounding from being so hot, I get home & wonder if I’d have pushed myself maybe I could’ve carried on but in the moment, I know I couldn’t have...evening run for me when it s hot!

Run 3 of week 1 this morning. Thought I was going to die! I used to run, but then came the winter, and the dark, and I became a snowflake. Now I'm having to start again and boy, do I feel your pain!!! My sorry carcass was dragged around the Common in the heat for the required 1 minute at a time and EVERYTHING hurt! Your 8 minutes of running sounds like a major achievement!!!

Mummycav profile image
MummycavAdministratorGraduate in reply toRunbun4

Well done on your run, those early weeks in the programme are where the gremlins lurk & they didn’t get to you this morning, you could’ve easily thought ‘no it’s too warm’ but you did what you set out to do 👏🏻

It is so different running in the heat. Don’t beat yourself up over it. The answer to whether to go out again is always yes. 🙂Some water would probably be a good idea to bring along. And if you can swing it, an early morning run before the sun really hits. If there is decent shade on your route that may help too. I found that runs where I had one too many layers really wiped me out.

Mummycav profile image
MummycavAdministratorGraduate in reply toDecker

I do try & run in the morning, straight after the school run but I don’t think that would’ve made a difference this morning as it was already hot when we got in the car...should’ve maybe waited until this evening but I have my friends little boys for tea so it would’ve been hard to squeeze one in...I will not make this mistake again!!! I’ve never taken water with me before but I will next time and yes, I had long pants on so maybe it’s time to get my legs out!!!

Decker profile image
Decker in reply toMummycav

Yeah, shorts and some water would probably really help you in that heat. No worries, you’ve got this and your body will adjust for the warmer climes. Also did you eat something before heading out? If I don’t eat, I feel it too.

Mummycav profile image
MummycavAdministratorGraduate in reply toDecker

No, I was also running on empty....🤔🙄...make no wonder I had a pants run...all these things add up..thanks Decker ...I might make a list of pre-running tips & stick it to the fridge!!

Yes it makes sense the combo would take its toll on you. 🙂

Doesnt matter does it, I ran with the wife this morning, on her w2 run, was a tad warm at 22deg, enjoyable though...but I didn't feel like doing much running, so was enough in the heat today, have some work to do in garden...😊

You're a darling and my little running virtual buddy, I take you with me when I go out. Lots of things can deter or slow our run, so they're not so good as others, but it's only a lapse in time, you'll soon be doing your 5ks before long 😊

Always routing for you Bev xx 😘😊

Thank you Beth...I’m honoured to go on your runs with you xx

Today was just one of those days I’m sure...it’s cooled down now, I was so tempted to go out again but I will wait patiently until Thursday xx

Hey Mummycav ....a) it's 23 minutes that you couldn't even run before (dive back into some of your old posts!) and b) it is 2.8km better than not getting out there!

But I know how you feel about running in the heat. We have gone from our -25C winter, have had our 2 weeks of Spring and are now racing into Summer and it is not pleasant I can tell you!

I try and get out as early as possible before the sun is too high. Make sure I am well hydrated. If needs be drive to the park so that you are cool in the car. Streets and buildings and pavements absorb the heat and bounce it straight back at you. And as soon as you finish running get some water down you.

Next run is better.

GB

Mummycav profile image
MummycavAdministratorGraduate in reply toGingerBohemian

Thanks GB...from -25 to whatever temperature is pretty impressive for someone to survive in never mind run in!!!! It’s def going to be early mornings or evenings for me in the summer, it’s cooled right down here now so I should e saved my run for the this eve but I was desperate to get out as I haven’t run since Friday...that’ll teach me! I sometimes forget about water too so I’m going to take some with me on hot days....should be back to normal next time 😉

It's just toooooooo hot MC... No way I would even try running after 7am and before 7pm (and that's pushing it :) ).

If it's any consolation I can only run for 10 mins at a time cos of the old arse cheek. But having not run for weeks and weeks now, I was so chuffed on Monday to run a tiny 10 mins again. Never thought I'd say that!! If I can do it every time I go to the gym that will do me, until I can afford to go to a sports physio (whenever that will be). You did 23 mins, brilliant job, don't put yourself down :( It's all about the mindset, I think you are a bit out of sorts at the mo.

You are a proper runner, who chooses to run exactly how you want to, 8 mins, 23, 30, whatever is enough and brilliant tooxx

Thank you so much Fishy...you are an inspiration to me...even with a dodgy arse cheek!! 😉😂😂 xx

Okay.. stop that right now.... !

We know how awesome you really are... and you should know it too...:)

All that you do, have done and will do, and that does not even include your runs..!

Some runs are amazing, some are so-so and some are plain yukky!

Why are we so hard on ourselves...? We are runners... we run :)

Just accept this Super Mummycav....:)

"You are braver than you believe, stronger than you seem, smarter than you think and loved more than you will ever know"

Go Christopher Robin... he must have been a runner :) xxxx

Mummycav profile image
MummycavAdministratorGraduate in reply toOldfloss

We are hard on ourselves aren’t we? I wonder why? I should know by now that there are def some yukky runs that get thrown in the mix but they seem to come just when we think we’re doing well?! Thank you for your kind words, you have been a super strength to me all this time...Even William looks for the ‘oldfloss bush’ when he’s running!! I try & do my best in all aspects of my life, be it being a mummy, being a friend, being a wife & now being a runner....I think I manage the first three quite well but am just learning the last one so yes, I have to be kind to myself...I think Christopher Robin was definitely a runner with those wise words!! That must’ve been his mantra xxxx
