I am about 3 and half stone over weight, BMI of 30.8 and have an underactive thyroid. I have my diet sorted and want to exercise but whenever i try to run or walk i have pain in my foot on the outside edge and it lasts weeks or more. it's very frustrating because i'm so determined but this keeps stopping me it's so painful. any sugestions?

Hi there, I can understand you frustration. Have a word with your gp and get their opinion. I myself have an under active thyroid, I went to talk to my gp about pains in my feet and it was a vitamin d deficiency so it might be worth a chat and a blood test in case that is what is causing the problem, as your doctor is the best place to sort it out. Good luck.

Hi.

I’m in pretty much exactly the same position as you. Underactive thyroid and a pre-existing injury. I’ve not yet found my final dose of Levo but I’m determined to come out of my ill period stronger than ever. I only started c25k again today, but I have had gait analysis and I’m actually going to do the process twice. I’m going to do it on a cross trainer to build strength in my bad leg and so that I don’t overdo things with my energy, then I’m going to move to a treadmill.

The plan is to do parkrun before my birthday in September!

I too am 3.5 at overweight. Running puts 3-5 times your body weight on each stride apparently! I would imagine experienced runners would suggest a gait analysis at a running shoe store. New trainers maybe?

Check the foot pain out with your GP and as others have suggested, have a gait analysis done and get some appropriate trainers - best thing that I did was to get good trainers. I am also 3 stone overweight and have an under active thyroid. Good on you for getting your diet sorted; I still haven’t managed that yet! I graduated last August and I keep on running because of the amazing support from this community( and also because I quite enjoy it). I’m sure once you get your foot issue sorted, you’ll be able to start your amazing running journey. Good luck👍

Great advice above - see your GP and have gait analysis done. I was scared to go into a running shop as a 3 stone overweight 52 year old who couldn't run but the people there were lovely and the new shoes made such a difference. Good luck.
