I far prefer trail running .. although I get a bit disheartened when I look at pace. I am a good minute and a half slower per km. Although the bonus is that I go longer and don't get the stitch. Is this difference similar to anyone out there or do I have to pick up the leg speed 😀

Road vs Trail
I prefer trail too. I feel closer to nature and it's more interesting having to twist and turn and leap over things and duck for low branches etc than just pounding the tarmac. I wouldn't worry about the speed you're going at on trail compared to road...there's more to contend with and that's what makes it more enjoyable in my mind. Enjoy your surroundings.
I love running in the woods and on muddy tracks too but because of the surface and various trip hazards, it would be dangerous to pelt along. I have tripped over three times now on bumps and roots I just did not see and I was plodding along. A broken bone or serious cut or head injury would not be helpful! Also, I often see a lovely view, want to take a photo or some wildlife, or even stop and consider which way to go. This all slows down the time. I give myself permission to be slower and to stop and enjoy the scenery anytime
You have to be more careful which is why you slow down as you negotiate your way around tree roots and stuff which could trip you up. It's not all about speed. The ups and downs of the trail build your fitness up quicker I'd say and help build leg strength. If you are new to running you need to develop your running slowly and carefully. It takes time. Trail running is really enjoyable, and being away from traffic is always a bonus
Have fun with your running and let the speed develop naturally, as it will if you keep running
YES!!! I adore trails but its tough as you need strong ankles and your wits about you. To give you an idea my best 5k time on a hilly trail is 32 minutes and my current 5k time on road is 26.40 so yes you will be much slower!!!
There is no 'have to' about any of this.
It's natural that your speed will drop as you have to avoid more obstacles, step higher in longer grass and watch where you're going much more carefully. I don't understand why you would think that is a problem. Stick with what you prefer and don't worry about your speed!
