Has anybody else suffered from runners' nipples?

It is quite common. Great bloody blooms like poppies on the front of your running shirt at the end of long runs. Even worse on long obstacle runs with lots of cold water immersion and splintery walls to chestplant over. I have almost taken a nipple off on one occasion, which has mewincing and doing tight little steppy dance under the desk just remembering.

Your options are: vaseline or Bodyglide anti-chafing block; sticking plasters over your nipples (see also 'delights of tearing off chest hair'); um, that's about it.

I ordered some Bodyglide yesterday - will arrive today (yay for Amazon Prime!). I'd noticed the soreness yesterday, showering after my run. Ran again today, and I can't imagine carrying on if I can't stop it!

Here's another vote for vaseline. Mine lives in my running belt so it's ready if I get caught out in the rain shower.

Owch. You have my sympathy - you reminded me of similar pain back in my breastfeeding days :D I can't help wondering why this seems to be recurrent in men, and more or less came to the same conclusion as Dugonga - a tight-fitting, breathable under-layer may be the answer as it protects from the material moving across it. Otherwise, there's a product called "Nipple guard" which appears to be simply small squares of Elastoplast that you stick over your nipples to protect them. Hope you find a solution.

I imagine men get this because they don't wear good, snug running bras! Definitely men could benefit from special mens running "bras" if only someone would invent them and a look at the breastfeeding section of online stores. :)

Or mibbe email Lady gaga and ask her where she gets her nipple doodahs.... :p

For post run relief apply a cabbage leaf (not frozen but fresh from the fridge) to each affected nipple, for females use bra to hold in place, for males I'm sure you'll find a way to keep attached if not ... it may be Karma :-) This is a very old fashioned tip re breastfeeding, hope it works out.

Thank you. I think I'll try to stop it happening in the first place, though!

I used Lansinoh ( not sure spelling?) when I was breastfeeding and my nipples were always fine, even when I got bitten. Might be worth a try??

Fortunately I've not suffered from this particular affliction as yet.

No doubt, now I've said that, after parkrun on Saturday I'll be coming back to this post looking at all of the cures and preventatives :)

Having, some time ago, been part to an incident involving a kitten, a toilet and a shower which resulted in some nipple damage (don't ask!) I feel your pain.

It is always in the shower when I realise, and always after a run in the rain (and cold weather). Vaseline is your friend _before_ you leave home.

Yes...my top was too loose and I really rubbed. I just got some fitted tops, so I would suggest getting something quite tight ( but not so tight you cant breathe), Or you can buy special tape for nipples I think? Sports direct??

I'll be giving Bodyglide a try at Parkrun. Hope it works!

For me, the problem has really only been during summer when my running shirts can become soaked with sweat - no sweat, no chafe. My solution has been to use bandaids - although I have recently got some bodyglide which I have yet needed to use

the other solution, of course, is to run shirtless.

I guess that's how real men run!

Don't forget you have to carry tyres and a log too!

lol. On the other hand, if you have wood and a spare tyre, perhaps not so advisable.

Rig! I am doing my 'your comment is inappropriate and I'm secretly amused' teacher face at you! (One of the 11 year olds I teach identified this when I sent him out to tell him off and he looked at me and went "miss, you're laughing behind your face. I can tell." - astute little sod!)

Ah! My Body Glide just dropped through the letterbox!

Vaseline is a runners friend! Nipples, a thin layer on your feet prior to long runs for blister prevention, forehead use to direct sweat away from your eyes... Great stuff!

If the Bodyglide doesn't work my vote goes to Udderly Anti Chaffing cream. On Amzon - looks expensive but a little goes a long way. Doing wonders on my (previously blistered) feet :)

Not for the nips as running bras solve the problem, but everywhere else that runs I use Lanacane - cheaper than bodyglide and less gloopy than Vaseline, and has worked a treat for me.

I have to say I've never had this problem - I must have super tough nipples.
