can you do the couch to 5 ks on a cross trainer?. It is the middle of winter here and is too wet and dark to run before or after work.

Of course you can -- and complete it entirely. You will get a much better fitness level doing that than just sitting on the couch complaining about the dark and cold :) BUT -- come the Spring/Summer you can expect quite a shock if/when you run on the road -- it is MUCH harder with MUCH greater impact. I would think that you would almost have to do it all over again (not that that would be a bad thing??) I am not very experienced with gym equipment - so I will be interested to hear what others have to say about this. I am going on a short 2 week cruise in a couple of months -- and I am intending to hit the ship's gym onboard -- have never done that before

Thanks for your reply. You are right it is far better to do something than nothing!

Totally agree with Bazza you will benefit a lot from a fitness point of view and that should make it easier when you can get out and run

HI! Welcome! Sorry about my English, not my native language. I´m also in winter here, cold and wet and dark :(

I have a treadmill and I started the program using it. Now I´m in wekk 8, and I try to do some runs outdoors, when possible, because time flies faster outside, and I can adjust my speed (?) easily running by my own and not at the treadmill, BUT the treadmill is a great thing for us when no outside run possible, and I´m still using it for most of the runs. The good thing: when spring comes we will be ready!!

Best regards, very good luck. Ana.

A cross trainer is brilliant for your aerobic fitness and certainly isn't a waste of time. However, it does use different muscles to running, particularly outdoor running so when you come to run outside you may find you need to start again with the programme just to help your legs get used to the pounding they get on the roads. Good luck - it's always hard when the weather and the seasons are against you.
