Following on from a nasty fall yesterday, i have discovered more bruising to the chest area this morning which is very painful when i breath in. I really don't feel that i can go running for a few days until i feel better, will this affect my level of fitness, bearing in mind i am 61 years old??

I don't know how you feel but have u seen a doctor? You might have cracked ribs :/ take it easy

Shoudn't affect your fitness levels although would suggest taking the first run steadily - but agree with Tiger - go see your GP first and get checked out. Pain when breathing is never a good sign and much better to know if there are any cracked ribs.

Take care.

Ouch :(

I agree with the advice above - get yourself checked out. Even if there's nothing they can do to speed the healing, at least you'll get proper advice on pain relief etc.

I think you'll be pleasantly surprised at how little your fitness is affected. Obviously once you know you're fit to run you shouldn't go out there aiming for a pb in a 5k run, and you might like to ease back in with some run/walk intervals, but you'll soon be back to where you left off.

managed a 3mile walk today and only had slight discomfort in the chest area, i really feel that i have pulled a muscle as it doesn't hurt all the time now, it depends on what i am doing. Really hope to be out running on Tuesday if i can, as i am starting to worry that i will stop altogether otherwise, i will probably just do the wk5 20min run and see how that goes.

Please please please get yourself checked out - make sure you haven't broken any ribs or done any other damage. If you have broken something you might need slightly stronger pain relief than what you can get over the counter. Hopefully shouldnt affect your running too much but might mean you need to rest up for a few days.

Really sorry to hear you are in so much pain but it doesn't surprise me by your description of your fall and injuries yesterday. Take it easy and perhaps take some pain killers will help. Don't try running until you are pain free you could fall and hurt yourself again. Hope it settles down soon for you. How did you get on at your bowling?

thanks for your reply, i am on painkillers which do seem to be helping and i am using arnica cream which is helping to bring out the bruising on my bosom. The bowls was fine, fortunately i fell on my left side so my right side was ok. We didnt win, the score was 56/64 to the other team. I am playing again tomorrow in a triple cup, what ever that is as i am new to the game and dont really understand what everything is yet.. Hopefully i will be able to start running again next week as i just love it. x

Good luck for tomorrow and good to hear it didn't stop you playing. I've been trying to get my hubby to join a local club but he says "that's exercise, I don't do that dangerous stuff" ;) He does like the garden at this time of the year though.

i love my garden too, got myself a greenhouse earlier this year so looking after my 'babies' in there as well, it is difficult sometimes to fit everything in what with still working full time, family, shopping, housework, laundry and watching the World Cup with the other half . Blimey, the list is endless for us women isn't it!!!!!! Roll on this time next year when i can retire. LOL
