After running my back has been so painful. Anyone else struggle with this? I don't think I should be running if this keeps happening.

You don't say what stage you are at. I started getting lower back pain as I increased my distances to over 10k and have been doing core strengthening exercises since to reinforce the lower back muscles. As muscles develop, through running, they sometimes get out of balance with other areas and further development of those areas is then required. It may be wise to consult your GP and/or a physio who can give better advice than we can offer.

Thank you. I am at very early stage just running 4x 5 mins with 90second walk in between. I have booked an appt with chiropractor this week but gutted because wanted to run 10k in August

That sounds like a good idea. Don't be too despondent. Most people can exercise to improve their weak areas and August is a long way off. Good luck and tell us how you get on.

my lower back (around waist level) has been getting steadily more painful since early on, and now I am at the end of week 5 I am really noticing it. It's not serious or stopping me doing anything but I had better do something about it. is there a handy link for core strengthening exercises? I'm doing a bit of yoga, tai chi, that sort of thing but probably need to do more.

Hi Jadie,

Not sure of your gender, but if your female it might be worth checking that you are adequatly supported, if you get my meaning. Changing to more supporting clothing helped my back.

I used to often suffer from lower back pain - have discovered if i stretch my hip flexor muscles very well, it can often ease lower back pain. Hip flexors are often missed in stretching routines but can get very tight when running and I found, cause back pain. Worth a try.

Which are the hip flexors?

The only advice I can give is to see your GP and, as suggested by another member, if you are female, check that you are adequately supported. I have a sports bra that I paid £4 for in Tesco - it's for heavy duty use. At that price it's worth getting one.

Hope you are soon recovered and best of luck with the rest of the programme. Best wishes.

If you are extremely well endowed like me, I'd recommend a shockabsorber available in all good sports shops and Debenhams etc. I had all sorts of pains to start with until I purchased this bra. I can get away with cheap trainers but not bra. Good luck

Seconded! I bought a shock absorber on a whim as there was one on sale when I was buying my trainers - I am SO impressed with it, it's MAGIC. Almost makes me want a breast reduction!

Thanks so much to you all for your responses, I have taken note of them all and will be following up. I really appreciate your support and encouragement. :)

Hi jadie, there could be different causes depending on the pain. Postural maybe. You cant beat Pilates for core strength. I would speak to a physio.
