Hiya, I just got a cancellation for a PFT tomorrow. This is my first time having this test as they were on hols due to C19.
Apart from spirometry test, I’ve been told there’s a number of tests. Would anyone have an idea what they maybe

A complete PFT is similar to basic spirometry. It all deals with the "dreaded" BLOW.....BLOW......BLOW.....KEEP BLOWINGGGG!However, you sit is a glass sealed compartment that allows the pressure changes to be monitored. This tells them your total lung capacity, how much residual air is left in your lungs, and various other benchmarks.
At one point you will inhale a different type of gas and hold your breath....then exhale. This gauges how well your lungs are diffusing the oxygen that you inhale into the bloodstream. Shows how well your alveoli are doing their job. It is called DLCO.
This was a very basic and general overview. Hope it helps.
PS - It isn't scary, painful, or intimidating at all. The compartment you sit in is clear and also has a quick release lever to comfort those that may be a bit claustrophobic. You'll be just fine.
That brilliant, thanks for the explanation. Much appreciated. Due at 2pm, today
Ask for a copy from either the technician or the doctor and ask to have it explained. Let us know how it goes.
PFT results. Confused🧐. I had a spirometry and DLCO test. They both came back as normal. I’m confused as to why I have continuous SOB when all other causes have been eliminated. The 2CT scans in June past confirmed emphysema. Would being on triple therapy affect the results? Any thoughts would be appreciated
I have no idea what "triple therapy" is? But shortness of breath is a sign of emphysema which you were diagnosed with recently. Did your doctor explain? You may need to ask him this question. I find many times I need to nail my doctor down to get answers. Are you seeing a pulmonologist or a General Practitioner?
Hi Jocopd, when I was in hospital In June the consultant explained briefly what emphysema is and I’ve done some research since . The triple therapy is Symbicort and incruse Ellipta. I assumed my emphysema would have registered on the tests given the extent of my SOB. I’m hoping to speak to the consultant in the next few weeks. Thanks for you’re input
They should also do the "6 minute walk test" - you walk up and down an area for 6 minutes. Usually to a chair and back and at your normal speed. Meanwhile the person giving the test will say (and this is a script they use)
1 min “You are doing well. You have 5 minutes to go.”
2 min “Keep up the good work. You have 4 minutes to go.”
3 min “You are doing well. You are halfway.”
4 min “Keep up the good work. You have only 2 minutes left.”
5 min “You are doing well. You have only 1 minute to go.”
6 min “Please stop where you are.”
If your oxygen drops they will stop you and have you use oxygen for the rest.
