Hey, newly installed loop ileostomy (2 months), and having a lot of troubles with eating still. Was advised to eat small portions of soft food for a while before getting more ambitious. This was going well, fairly consistent output from the stoma after eating until it wasn’t. Now digestion seems like a real struggle and I get zero output until I go to sleep so I wake up 2 or 3 times a night to empty. I can feel and hear movement all day but nothing comes out! Has anyone been through similar? I need to eat to put on weight but I can’t eat too much as I start to feel nauseous.
Night only output!: Hey, newly installed... - Living with a Stoma
Night only output!
Hi I have had my stoma for 2 and a half years and the start was a bit difficult during the night as I had the same issue, but with your food I was told eat anything you want but chew and chew. If it’s not working during the day I was told by people on the site to drink a can of coke if that doesn’t work drink another. I do hope this helps it’s quite a thing to get used to but it does get better. Good luck with it all 👍.

It depends what you eat and the time, obviously don't eat at least 2-3 hours before u go to bed. But I still have to set an alarm every 2 hours at night, to empty my stoma. My thinking is because your body is relaxed so if your relaxed usually output is more frequent . But then I only have a metre of small bowel left so my stoma would be crazy, perhaps ringing your nutritionist would be your best bet no good ringing your. G.p cause of the backlog COVID etc. Try things like mashed potato because it's soft ice cream not fruit these will fly out literally I avoid dairy apart from skimmed milk and then only a dash. If you drink coffee stop major stimulant. For your nausea which I also suffer from ginger nut biscuits will definitely work, and help you gain some weight, but definitely get in contact with your nutritionist, I wish you well this won't be forever it will calm down
I've had the same thing happen to me. I discovered that when I lie down, things start working.
My issue is that I am a cat-napper. I can't seem to sleep well at night, I typically sit in bed and can fall asleep that way - a little snooze at a time. Then, after several nights like this I can fall asleep lying down. So, I end up constipated when I catnap and have a very heavy output when I'm able to sleep normally.
I think it's just the positions of the bowels. Probably less stress when in a normal sleep position. Just my thoughts and experience.
