Swimming With An Ileostomy Bag

Hi so I’ve been having some issues with my bag staying stuck on and I want to do a lifeguard course but currently can only do a few dives before water gets underneath the adhesive. Does anyone know of a way to try prevent this from happening?

In general your pouching system is resistant to water and with a proper fit, it is designed not to leak.

You might want to try these points.

Eat a few hours before swimming.

Empty your pouch before you start.

Avoid applying a new skin barrier/wafer or pouch immediately before you start.

If you can allow 12 hours for proper adhesion of the wafer before hitting the waterUsing

Ask your supplier about obtaining waterproof tape or water-specific barrier strips which should not be necessary but could give you that extra piece of mind.

Wishing you all the best with your course.

You might try Sure Seal Rings. They’re kind of a big sticker that goes over your wafer. I’ve never tried them, but I’ve read good reviews. I ordered a sample once but never received it, so you may have to buy a box to try them.

I had my op in April 2016 and resumed my swimming in early 2017. I was concerned a bit before I recommenced swimming I have the addition issue of a parastomal hernia and having check things out and talked with my stoma nurse decided to go for a swimwrap. I wear the wrap under my swimming shorts ( needs to be quite snug) to keep the bag in place and have never had a leak of water into the pouch and it has always remained in place. Yes, often during swimming I check that all is still in place but I have never had a problem so far! I normally go swimming twice a week, my normal routine is get up in the morning around 7.00am, shower and then change my bag (Welland Aura Drainable pouch). I have a light breakfast, tea and toast around 7.45 - 8.00 do a couple of chores and then at around 9.15 empty my bag (not normally much in it but precautionary really). I get to the pool and would expect to be in the water by around 9.35 - 9.40. I normally swim until around 10.30 covering 40 lengths which in my pool equates to a 1,000 metres. I don't dive and because of the hernia tend to do the breaststroke only. If you have not already tried it I would give a swimwrap a try to see if that helps.

Taking a shower really shouldn’t be a problem. Have you tried samples of different appliances? There may be something out there that works better for you. Or check with an ostomy nurse for help.

Hi Bob, what kind of stoma paste do you use? I have had my stoma right side not left for 20 years, had so much trouble leaking 6 - 8 times aday, come to find out it was the Hollister wafer. It was to hard so then they put me on Convatack wafers and now it stays on for 7 to 10 days. Sorry for the spelling also try Bravo elastic barrier striptsI got them as a sample now I never change the my wafer without putting them all around the paper tape on the out side of wafer they are half moon shaped and that are great gone swimming take showers with it on. I hope this was helpful. God bless.
