Positive Fit Test

Hi, I found blood in my stool which seems to come and go. I can go weeks with no blood and then it appears. I ignored it for a whole and finally when the doctor who sent away for a FIT test. I forgot about it and then got a letter from the local hospital to say that I have a telephone consultation with a consultant surgeon in a weeks time. No further explanation which was horrible and of no reassurance of what is going on. I havent really noticed any other symptoms apart from noticing I am going to the toilet alot and feeling bloated but putting that down to the diet coke I drink. I have another 7 days to wait until the call and I cant think of anything else.

Hi Lilly2410,

Thank you for posting in Colon Cancer Connected. I'm sorry you are having these symptoms. You noticed the blood in your stool so the FIT coming back positive shouldn't be a surprise.

It sounds like the doctor wants to gather more information from you to determine next plans to find out what the causes are for the blood in your stool. There are many causes for blood in the stool, some are very treatable with medication, diet change, and minor procedures, and of course, there are more serious reasons for blood in the stool as well. For that reason, we always advise patients to seek medical care when they have blood in the stool. You are doing this and that's good.

It's great you are getting this looked into. You are seeing a sign and looking to get answers for what's happening. Normally a positive FIT would be followed by scheduling a colonoscopy. If there are not any external reasons like hemorrhoids, it could be a polyp and all of that can be determined with a colonoscopy.

We wish you the best with you consultation. It's good you are seeking answers for this issue. Please check back with us and let is know the next step you'll be taking.

Thank You,

~Tom, GCCA Survivor - Colon Cancer Connected Site Administrator.

Have you had your Colonoscopy yet. I had a positive FIT test weeks ago, still no sign of an appointment from hospital. Did you have any blood tests done? Were they ok?Because my bloods were ok this seems to be why I am still waiting.

Not what you're looking for?
