Recently I started having stomach pains and went to the toilet for what I presumed was going to be dihorriea and what was in the toilet bowl was just pure blood and this continued through out the day there was no stool was just pure blood so phoned the docs and sent a sample and sorry for this but I have attached a picture of my sample as I’m concerned it may be something serious

Hi Celtic12345 ... Thank you for posting in Colon Cancer Connected.

You are on the right path to determine the cause. I congratulate you on acting quickly. I would assume you are setting up a visit to your physician. Where this blood is coming from is the important knowledge.

When you experience blood in the stool, the doctor will often perform a DRE (digital rectal exam) where they will both look and feel with their gloved fingers, to see if an any anal fissure (tears in the anus), hemorrhoids, or something else that could be causing the bleeding. Depending on the DRE results, any symptoms you are experiencing, family history, other factors, etc. your doctor will determine if further tests need to be performed.

Please keep us informed on your results.

Hi,

Yes I have been to see the doctor (I’m based in uk) and had to give the sample which I had posted picture of which I have no stool when going to toilet just seems to be pure blood I do not have any pain in my pain in my anus or feel any tears or lumps etc the pain is In my stomach so not sure what’s going on I have had a on going cough for around 5/6 weeks also (not covid been for numerous tests all negative) so not sure if that is connected

Hi Celtic12345 ... Thank you for the follow up information. Has your doctor been in touch about further actions to be taken pertaining to your symptoms? Your symptoms and provided information are pretty significant.

Abdominal pain needs to be further investigated. Especially if it's been over an extended period of time. You state where you do not have pain and that is very useful, meaningful information to have. I would suggest further discussions with your doctor and perhaps obtain a CT scan, a colonoscopy or both. I would think swift responses from your doctor are warranted. You've got two symptoms going on here ... bleeding and abdominal pain.

I am not sure what role the cough is playing in all this. That's an interesting twist to the symptoms.

A close chat with your healthcare team is necessary. You give me the impression you are all over this and will make that happen. Knowledge is key.

Again, please keep us informed of your journey with this. Stay positive and stay strong.

So update,

I went to the hospital and was referred to the colo rectal department and they checked my back passage and no cuts or tears and no hemmaroids that could of caused the bleeding so been put on a waiting list for a sigmoidoscopy as urgent but they have told me it may still take time to have the procedure due to the pandemic etc

I have recently been diagnosed with IBD and this was one of my symptoms, I could have taken those pictures myself! I also get abdominal cramping with it. It’s scary to see blood but you’ve done the right thing going to the dr and you’ll get the sigmoidoscopy and they will be able to tell you where it’s coming from.

Yes it was scary especially after it happening over ten times in two days or so after never experiencing this before, out of curiosity did you have to get the sigmoidoscopy to diagnose yours? And is there any treatment. Just hoping it’s nothing more serious potentially. Does Ibd also cause constipation ?

Yes I was diagnosed with a sigmoidoscopy, they took biopsy’s to confirm. And yeah there is treatment, IBD is a lifelong disease but meds can keep it under control. I get constipated from time to time, not too often but I know alot of people with IBD who do get very constipated, it can go both ways. But the passing blood and mucus like you have been doing is a classic IBD symptom, that has happened to me more times than I’d like to count but they can stop it with the right meds.

Ah right Iv been put on the waiting list as “urgent” but couldn’t give me a time scale as covid has made everything manic and my cousin has crohns so now a little about some IBD related things. Just not sure if this will be a one off thing the pictures I sent or is this maybe the start of it. Sorry if I’m being too intrusive here did you have the blood and mucus and also other times your stool was normal ? Just so I have an indication of my stools went back normal this can happen

Yeah I was the same, was told I would be seen within 2 weeks but ended up being 4. Not too bad I guess but it’s alot of time to sit and worry yourself. I’ve only just been diagnosed myself but had my symptoms for years. And yes I could go months where everything was normal and then the blood/mucus would begin, some days it would be there, others no sign of it or other days it’s all that I would pass! With IBD the disease can go into remission where you would have no symptoms, which I think must be why it can kinda come and go. I’ve gone a couple of years at a time with no symptoms then something will set them off, the most recent being antibiotics!

Think might be longer than that but suppose can’t do much about that and it’s not the drs faults the way the world is at the minute, this information has been helpful means i can look out for certain things and know that if goes back to normal doesn’t mean it’s all necessarily good just need to keep an eye on it. Hopefully it’s sooner rather than later as I’m currently off work as this started but will be due to go back and feeling like this isn’t great

Even if it does clear up get the sigmoidoscopy done anyway because if it is IBD then it will come back at some stage and you’ll have to go through all the worry again. That’s what I kept doing and it’s not worth it. Oh it’s horrible trying to work when you have something like this going on, I hope your appointment comes through really soon!

Could be waiting as long as 7/8 months to even get my sigmoidoscopy which isn’t great but nothing I can do about that

Oh that’s not right, no way! Has your dr taken a stool sample from you? Usually they do that and when it confirms blood you get urgently referred on a 2 week pathway!! That’s what happened to me. You cannot wait that long if you are bleeding.

I sent a sample to my dr at the start of the week Monday (I had attached a picture of the sample in the bottle start of this thread, but will attach again) and he kept going on about food poisoning which when you see the sample it’s not that. When I ended up in the hospital in edinbrugh they said the dr had only sent it to be tested for bacterial I.e food poisoning so they weren’t happy and that came back negative for any bacterial problems and they also mentioned cause I’m only 27 I shouldn’t be at risk of more serious conditions I.e cancer so yeah not sure what I’m supposed to do

That’s ridiculous! You can’t be too young for anything else to be wrong, that’s terrible, is there anyway you can go get a second opinion? Im 33 and in Scotland too and my diagnosis process - tell dr about blood, she looked and examined me and could not feel any haemorrhoids or source of blood, I was then told to do a fit test (stool sample which only checks for blood) that came back positive and was immediately put on the 2 weeks pathway! Don’t let them fob you off with age, maybe cancer is very unlikely but there’s so many other things it would be that they need to treat

Celtic12345 in reply toberrry4

Yeah I thought that and was so annoyed when my local dr kept saying ooh it will be food poisoning. I was like me my wife and kid have ate same dinners etc and they are fine and Iv had food poisoning before and never went to the toilet and only passed blood was no feaces, I then went to St. John’s hospital and they said wasn’t happy that that’s all the dr tested for and as was no pain nipping or visable lumps or bumps at my back side was highly unlikely was hemmaroids or cuts which they referred me to the western in edinbrugh who then physically examined my back side never been so embarrassed in my life 🙈 and said was no blood coming from hemmaroids etc so again ruled that out so referred me for the sigmoidoscopy

oh I know the examination isn't nice at all is it 😅 i really hope you're not waiting too long at all and your appointment comes through soon, just keep pestering them if it doesn't, as far as i know any bleeding goes on the 2 week pathway

Not at all but suppose when your concerned about your health it doesn’t matter and hope so and no one mentioned this path way thing to me so I had no idea about it
