I had a horrible night 2 nights ago. I woke up To what felt like food poisoning. Diarrhea, sweats, etc. once it was over I felt better. At this point I didn’t look to see what my poop looked like. A few hours later I woke up and felt like I had to go. Only bloody mucus came out. See photo. This happened for the next few trips. The next day I was able to go and it was loose poop with clotted blood on the outside. I met with my doc and she scheduled a stool sample and blood work. Blood work was fine with no inflammatory marker. I haven’t gone poop for 2 days. I’ve never seen just bloody mucus come out of my bottom so it is shocking. I also am having some mild discomfort in the left side of my belly.

Hi, firstly - how old are you? What is your diet and activity level? Has anything similar happened before? Any previous digestive issues? Any hereditary digestive issues?I am asking just to see the whole picture. Accordingly to the limited information you provided, the highest probability of your current diagnosis is a minor physical damage to your colon/rectal/anal mucosa or wall. It can easily happen during bacterial infection (food poisoning) that results into repeated defecation or excessive straining during constipation. Both have tendency to create fissures and put strain on haemmorhoids. Both of these conditions lead to bright red blood in feces and accumulation of mucus. Yet, if this repeats often and for a period of several weeks - ask for digital rectal examination and sigmoidoscopy/colonoscopy to resolve your issues. In the meantime you can accelerate the healing process by eating food that can be passed easily (high fibre) and use ointment with inner applicator with/or anal suppositories for treating haemmorhoids. This can help to lubricate and protect the rectal wall from any further damage - tgus accelerate healing and prevent reoccurence. Most importantly-do not stress, rectal bleeding is unfortunately all way too common and in vast majority of cases it does not imply anything nefarious. Especially when you are under 40 ;)
