I have recently been diagnosed with iron deficiency anemia, I am waiting for a colonoscopy, but im worried if I have cancer it will be aggressive. My sister died in January this year of liver cancer, she was diagnosed at the end of November last year, my time line is very similar to hers. I cant bear to put my mum through more pain

I have one scheduled as well due to anemia. I had it for about 4 years and docs want to do a colonoscopy to rule out gi bleeding. I’m a 31 year old man. How long have you been anemic?

Oh ok. I have chronic hemmoroids but I’m pretty sure it’s been a slow leak over the last few years. My hemmoroids are internal and prolapsed. I’m thinking this has caused my anemia over the years. If it was something sinister, I’m sure it wouldn’t be this long.

Can I ask what symptoms you’ve had? Thanks

I have been having irregular bowel movements for 2/3 months, really tired and itchy.

I've had the fit test, but haven't got the results yet. My granny on my dads side had bowel cancer and my aunt on my mums side had bowel cancer too. I hope the colonoscopy doesn't show cancer, I don't think my mum could cope, she's already lost one daughter and had breast cancer herself.

What stage was your mom's cancer when she was diagnosed? Because I'm afraid that I have possibly left some type of colorectal cancer go undiagnosed for too long now and am real scared of what my prognosis might be, especially since I might very well have at least a partial bowel obstruction right now and have no idea how I'll be able to get a colonoscopy with it, given how hard it is for me to pass stool right now.

Thanks for letting me know. I really appreciate it. If I do have colorectal cancer, I hope my prognosis will somehow end up being as good as your mother's was.

Dear Bubbles1218 ,Thank you for posting and I'm so sorry for the loss of your sister. With the family history of cancer, I am sure that is adding to your anxiety.

Is your colonoscopy scheduled? That is the most important next step in determining what is going on, to get that procedure done. Please let us know if you have a date.

Additionally, due to your family history, there may be a benefit to having genetic tests done to determine if you are a carrier for any hereditary cancer syndromes.

We are hoping for a good result with your colonoscopy, but regardless of what the result is, we will be here for you, connecting you to resources and others who can provide support.

Please let us know when you'll have that colonoscopy and as hard as it is, try not to let the anxiety get to you while you are waiting. (The waiting is such a hard part of any health issue).

We're here for you,

~Nicole @ GCCA
