Has anyone ever had bright red blood clots separated from the stool?

Hello all,

I am so happy that I’ve found this site! I am hoping that I can find some answer or sign of relief before going to see my specialist.

I am a 38 yo female with a very long history of hemorrhoids before the age of 20 and crohn's disease. I’ve had experienced what all had experienced with the rectal bleeding, constipation, diarrhea, straining and change in stool. I’ve even had an hemorrhoidectomy done before the age of 25 but lucky me just keeps getting hemorrhoids no matter what I do along with constipation.

Though I have changed my diet and followed all the recommendations from my specialist, it has not stopped me from getting them. I was told that I was one of the unlucky one. Though my hemorrhoids aren’t angry most of the time now, every now and then they do get inflamed and bleed. However today was different which sent me off to a whole new level freaking out.

For the last several months, I’ve noticed that I’ve been extremely bloated, gassy, fatigue occasional abdominal pain and have had a mixture of super soft stool and diarrhea along with my irregular bowel movements. However today, I had an urgent rush to poop. When I pooped, I’ve felt this gushing with my poop. I of course looked to see what’s going down there and of course the toilet is filled with blood. I’m thinking that may be my hemorrhoids popped but noted no pain. As I’m wiping and inspecting the toilet tissue paper, there’s this good chuck of bright red blood clot the size of 1/4 of a half of a graham cracker square. Sorry, couldn’t think of anything else to compare to. I wiped again and there were more cloths but smaller and smaller chunks as I’m wiping. This has never happened before.

So I’m freaking out and I called my hemorrhoid specialist. Of course it’s a Friday and late in the afternoon already, spoken with a triage nurse who informed me that my provider is unable to see me however informed me that if it continues and bleeding won’t stop, I should go to the ER. Otherwise next available appointment in which I’ve not schedule yet as all the schedulers had gone home.

Has anyone had a similar situation and if so, what was your outcome? Hemorrhoids or Colon Cancer?

Thanks all and sorry for the long post.

HappyG0, thank you for posting and sharing with us. So sorry to hear about your health challenges - that sounds pretty scary. That sounds like a lot of blood - I would definitely encourage you to go to the ER if that happens again in the meantime before you can get in to see your specialist.

It is good that you have such specifics about your history with bleeding, and especially noting what is different now vs. what you've experienced in the past.

Were you able to make an appointment?

Sometimes specialists only want to see when you are actively having a bleeding episode, which can be really challenging because they may not have an appointment available when you are actively bleeding. That's why it can be good to get in to see them as soon as they have an appointment available, and decide together what the next step is if it happens again (emergency room vs. getting urgent access and a same-day appointment with the specialist).

I'm assuming the answer is yes, but have you had a colonoscopy(s) at some point with your history of GI issues?

Please keep us posted and hang in there,

Hi Nicole! Thank you for your response!

I do have an appointment tomorrow, thankfully. No other incidents since. I’ve never had a colonoscopy yet but will see what she says tomorrow. Will update this post as I go.
