Advice for Traveling to Guatemala & Belize

Recently diagnosed with CLL and on Brukinsa now. This June I would like to take a trip with my adult son and nephews to Guatemala and Belize. We're coming from Los Angeles. It is a 10-day trip with a very good tour company with a local guide. Mostly small towns and beaches. Good quality hotels. I'm only 60 and other than CLL my health is good. I've spent a lot of time in developing countries and never had any major health issues. But with CLL it is of course different.

I will of course wear a mask on planes, buses, etc. and be mindful of handwashing, wiping down surfaces, etc. So besides getting travel insurance and bringing prophylactic doses of Paxlovid and anti-biotics is there anything anyone else can recommend?

The trip starts near Guatemala City and ends near Belize City. So, if I did have to go to a hospital at some point , it would be more likely that it would be in Belize where the healthcare is probably pretty basic.

It has been a few years since I was in Belize, but I can confirm that the medical facilities are somewhat basic.

Travelling to these areas could be worrying due to the massive increase in Dengue fever outbreaks.

Local name being " Break Bone Fever ", as that is what it feels like.

Shown below are a series of page links you would be wise to study, there is development of a vaccine for Dengue, but you should investigate with a knowledgeable doctor as to if this is a live vaccine, and or even yet available.

Additionally CHIKUNGUNYA has spread throughout the Caribbean and you should research this also.

Take care

Just check your international health insurance coverage. Bring a copy of your latest labs and prescriptions in case you need to see a doctor.
