Bloodwork Question

Posting my results below. My Lymphocytes have been creeping up, last test was 12.7 in April.

At the time of having blood drawn, I had been fighting off a cold. I am wondering if that could impact the Lymphocyte and WBC numbers?

Based on my numbers, I am assuming that I will continue on the W&W protocol, but wondering if they will do another CT scan as my Spleen was 17cm in April as well.

Thanks for any info or thoughts.

Hello Cll guy. I think the answer is yes, a cold could raise your wbc. That said, the changes in your wbc are so slight that it’s almost no change at all. It is the lymphocyte count that you should keep an eye on. If your lymphocytes were 12.7 in April, and are 14.7 now, that seems no big deal at all, even if the change was due to cll. I would venture a guess that someone could do two sets of labs on the same day, one in the morning and one in the afternoon, and see changes in your range solely due to testing variations.

Your hemoglobin and platelets are fine. If your lymphocytes continue to have such small changes from one lab to the nest, you might well have a more indolent form of cll and enjoy a long watch and wait. Of course your doctor knows your entire history and is the best one to ask.

Your spleen at 17cm is only moderately enlarged, as I understand the tables. They probably did your first ct scan to get a baseline and I cant see why they would do another scan now or any time in the near future. As spleens enlarge, they become palpable as they extend below the ribcage. I think absent some odd issue, your doctors will just check your spleen manually going forward by feeling for the spleen below your ribcage. A normal spleen usually can not be felt by a doctor because it’s hidden behind the rib cage. A doctor can estimate the size by how far it extends under the ribcage. I am no expert for sure, but I would think your labs and spleen size are consistent with early stage cll. Hopefully you will be one of the lucky ones whose cll progresses very slowly and be in watch and wait for a long time.

Hi there & thanks so much for taking the time for such a detailed response. It is really appreciated. I am not having any issues resulting from an enlarged spleen, such as problems sleeping on my side or loss of appetite. So, I hope your prediction is true. I have a phone consult in two weeks regarding the results. I just wanted to get some eyes and opinions on the results prior - to be prepared and ask any relevant questions.

When my WBC had jumped considerably, I thought it was because I had a lot of infections in the previous six months. My consultant very sweetly disabused me of this idea pointing out that the CLL had caused the wbc to be inefficient and so it was the other way round.
