Hematocrit and CLL

Is it typical to have high hematocrit with CLL?I was diagnosed in 2020 with a favorable prognosis.

I see oncologist each 4 months. It's the longest interval she permits.

My last appointment I had:

WBC 15.0

HCT 51%

My MD has suggested possibly (about a year ago but nothing since then) taking hydroxyurea. However, that discussion has not resurfaced.

I have had to have blood withdrawn about 5 times to lower the hematocrit. Since 2020.

My next appointment is this Wednesday, 7 February.

I feel great. I exercise, I travel very often by plane, I have learned to speak a new language and I have no idea what I should be feeling like with CLL. But I am told that altitude raises hematocrit which can make the problem worse. Also, those with CLL in Mexico City, DF, are living at @8500'. Higher than the altitude in a pressurized plane.

Does anyone have experience with this?

I would think that high hematocrit is linked to water intake, are you well hydrated? Also alcohol consumption - do you like to have e.g. a glass of wine every day? How is your diet? Have you discussed this with your doctor? What did they say?

Possibly Polycythemia Vera? Ask your doctor on Wednesday if this is what it could be. Good luck. Sally
