Mosquito bites while on Acalabrutinib

My husband has been on Acalabrutinib for CLL for 3 years. We walk about 4 -5 times a week and have lunch in the park. Recently he has been getting 2-3 mosquito bites at a time that seem to have an exaggerated response being slightly bigger with a swollen area of about 1-2 cm of inflamation around them and very itchy . I have had no bites even though Toronto has had a lot of rain this summer.

We were in Florida a few months ago and his mosquito bites looked completly normal .

Before he started treatment , 3 years ago he had some very strange looking bites.

His ALC is stable and only slightly elavated.

Is this an indication that his CLL and immunity are worsening ?

Thank you

Ileana

Hi ikahan,

-

An exaggerated reaction to bug bites is common among us CLL patients, and to my knowledge it has not been linked to any specific stage of progression or treatment. Our immune system is very complex and CLL has a disruptive effect on it, but like everything else with CLL the issues vary from patient to patient. Perhaps different species of mosquito have a different effect on your husband.

Hi there. I didn’t know I had CLL but, looking back at blood tests now, my mosquito bites went bananas the instant I developed CLL, so I agree, I think it’s just the CLL, not the stage. Within 24 hrs I would get cellulitis after a whacking reaction, so I saw a dermatologist to see if I was allergic. I wasn’t, and was labelled “hypersensitive skin” but I got access to antibiotics to keep at home, in case.

I’ve not found a way to reduce the reaction so I avoid mosquitos! Hurts so much when I get bitten!

Good luck!

Hi ikahan,

I live on the southern shore of Lake Erie and about this time there is a different species of mosquito that dominates. It is very small and affects me worse than the early species. This year it is prolific. May be something as simple as this.

And I see Len already suggested this- he is so thorough!

Thank you Lexie for a plausible explanation.
