CLL and Bells Palsy.

Hi all, I am presently being transferred to my new local Hematology team, and last Monday I was diagnosed with Bells Palsy. does anyone have any info on any complications in having CLL and then Bells Palsy.

I am on 'Prednisolon', which has a side effect of weaker immunity, and vulnerability to infections.

I have notified my new Hematology Team of this, and they have suddenly brough my appointment forward considerably, to the 24th July'

Also, can anyone assist me in accessing a list of the names and qualifications of our local NHS Hospital, Hematology Consultants. I have tried all variations of searches but to no avail.

Any views, or experiences would be very much appreciated

Thanks Ron.

Doesn't the website of your local HS trust give the names of the consultants by dept.? When I was first diagnosed 15 years ago I looked them up in the medical directory in a public library

Hi V,

Hmm. I contracted Bell's Palsy about seven weeks ago, presumably because I'd been exposed to the flu, which my son had, and which can trigger the condition.

I was on low-dose prednisone for ten days, and valocyclovir (Valtrex) 1000mg for a couple weeks.

Thankfully, after a week, I started to get some movement back, and after 2-3 weeks, the condition had essentially disappeared.

Hope yours improves as quickly!

Thanks so much for the info, it was off much interest to me, and reassure me somewhat.

Can I ask if you have CLL and are on treatment yet, as I go for same, next week, after 5 years W&W

I am currently attempting to ascertain if there is a connexction between CLL and Bells Palsy'.

Thanks again much appreciated

Regards Ron

Hi Ron,

Yeah, I have CLL, currently on Zanabrutunib, which wasn’t paused during the palsy. (Been on it since February, to good effect.) I’d been taking Valtrex all along, as a precaution, and I wonder if that’s what led me to have such a mild case of Bell’s: as I was already on a treatment for it before I got it! … As for prednisone, I think I was on 10mg twice day.

Feel free to message me if you have other questions!

Thanks DRM18, that helped a lot, and I am somewhat reassured, I hope things continue to work out well for you.

All the best

I had contracted Shingles one week before being hit with Bells Palsy. I am on Ibrutinib for CLL and have been on Valtrex since. I continued with treatment through the Shingles and the Palsy. That was four years ago and things have been fine after that. It took about 6 weeks for the Palsy to vanish and a little longer for the Shingles. I hope things clear up quickly for you. 🙂
