Being Positive and Supportive

As I read all the kind responses to my post about finally feeling better I realize the best way to support this group and the best medicine for me and my family is to be positive, hopeful and upbeat.

During the FCR treatment in 2018 I was just that!

Then after 11 skin cancer surgeries, Covid, and many family members anger about my masks, I sunk into despair and all of you have helped me get out of it!!

Thank you all and God bless.

MY NEW MANTRA IS BE POSITIVE, HOPEFUL AND ENCOURAGING!!!!!!

I am sorry you had to endure disapproval about wearing masks. But I am glad you are happy now.

Interestingly, it can take effort to allow oneself to feel happiness. No one’s life is ever ideal but there are always good things going on.

there are a lot of good things and to enjoy what one has instead of pining over what's missing is key

And learning to tune out or not care about a spouse always clamoring for me to do more things which places me at undo risk has also been helpful

It is difficult because others do not necessarily understand what it is like to be afraid of infection. I have been laughed at for wearing a mask and my partner has been cross with me for not wanting to touch public door handles when we are out and about. He’s not that careful at home, either. I’m learning how to stick-up for myself. Lots of my friends immediately hug me when we meet, even though they know I have CLL and would prefer not to hug. It’s just an automatic reaction and they forget - I’ve learned to hold my breath and turn my head away. I just have to keep reminding everyone.

Good to hear you have your new mantra!

I’ve learned, too that negative thinking is not so bad if it spurs you to positive action. I learned that from a book When the Body Says No.

Having a family that would get mad at your for wearing a mask must be super duper hard. So glad you got through it and come out of it happier.

Thank you. It's still ongoing but to a lesser extent, negotiating my risks v. her desires and cruel comments. She has started apologizing for some of the mean comments which I guess is another step in the right direction.

And I'm learning better how to negotiate without contention.

Thx again
