When I sleep at night I have middle back pain, around right and left rib cages. Especially when I turn from side to side.
This has been going on for a year. The other day I did an experiment for a few days and decided not to eat or drink after 6pm. That evening I had NO PAIN all night.
Why this is happening?

Sounds like it could be normal digestion issues. As we age, our digestive system both slows down and can start having problems with certain foods (ie - lactose intolerance tends to grow as we age).
If a 6pm eating/drinking stop helped you sleep, you may want to continue that experiment (and maybe inch it later if 6pm is too hard) to see where your "perfect" point is.
You may also want to experiment with adding ginger to a tea after dinner. Ginger both speeds up digestion and makes it easier on your system, so it might also alleviate some symptoms.
You might try to differentiate between eating and drinking after 6 pm to see which affects you more. Kidneys can cause lower back pain as well as your abdominal core muscles being weak.
A good friend (who does not have CLL) recently had lower back pain and her kidneys were suspected. After a few tests, it was determined her kidneys were not the issue, just needs to strengthen her core muscles like many of us.
