Omega 3

Hi all, hope everyone is feeling well.

My husband has CLL and has been taking Ibrutinib for 3-years.

I just wondered if Omega 3 is something you can take with CLL or should it be avoided? I have read a lot about it’s benefits, but not sure if it’s suitable for people with CLL.

Many thanks

Ibrutinib has an off target in platelets, which is why bruising and more importantly bleeding is a common side effect. There are also some concerns about omega 3 increasing the same risk, so probably not a good combination.

My doctor told me to quit taking omega 3 when I started Ibrutinib because of the bruising and bleeding.

Just eat some fish twice a week. But most importantly check which foods contain Omega 6 and restrict those severely. The ratio between Omega sixes and omega-3s in one's diet is very important for good health. And to keep the ratio one to one or in the worst case one to four the solution is not to eat more omega-3s but to reduce the omega-6s.

I take ibrutinib and I eat salmon occassionally and occassionally certain other foods that contain omega 3. Is it a problem eating, for example, salmon once or twice a month?

I was told not to take Omega 3 with Ibrutinib. I stopped codliver oil capsules and using linseeds in my breakfast cereals. I do eat salmon and other oily fish at times and my platelets have been ok, Anne uk

I eat some salmon every day since many years : About 5 oz. My platelets are 200+ . Age 88 since 4 years for CLL on Imbruvica. CBC almost normal. I wonder if sardines should also similarly considered as Omega 3 issue ? Any knowledge on sardines (with no salt added ) ? I do not eat meat or eggs since decades: Only salmon (no salt) - and non-fat yogurt for calcium, protein, probiotics. My lipids tests are in good normal range. I buy canned wild caught Alaska salmon $ 5 for 15oz can. I put the salmon in a sieve and rinse plenty of water over it to remove as much as possible of the added salt as possible. Fresh farmed salmon from Chile or Florida costs $ 14 a pound. I bruise somewhat but propably in the normal range with 88 year old skin and age-loss of collagen.
