What pox do you choose?

I choose the monkeypox, with which we will get to know very briefly for general culture.

I ask people who don't like to read about diseases to refrain or read at their own risk.

The idea is only one - knowledge is power!

Monkeypox and blood cancer - read more here: bloodcancer.org.uk/news/mon...

slight lyrical digression-what beautiful cells!😀😀😀

Yalokin -

At least one person has died from Monkeypox - severely immunocompromised person in Texas. News reports have not revealed the cause of their immunocompromise.

Despite what the bloodcancer.uk page said, there is indeed a treatment - TPOXX (tecovirimat), VIGIV (Vaccinia Immune Globulin Intravenous), Cidofovir (Vistide), Brincidofovir (also known as CMX001 or Tembexa):

cdc.gov/poxvirus/monkeypox/...

which links to:

cdc.gov/poxvirus/monkeypox/...

" Patients who should be considered for treatment following consultation with CDC might include:

...leukemia..."

Maybe those therapeutics are not commonly available in the UK?

Case counts have been generally falling in most areas of the US:

I'm not too concerned for myself due to lack of contact with carriers of much of anything, except maybe mosquitos and my wife, who teaches 8th grade. So many diseases are possible here in New Orleans, including West Nile Virus. We also host many festivals, with parades and dancing. The Southern Decadence festival just ended. It might be a few weeks to see how much rise in disease we'll see.

[Edit:] They cancelled a big outdoor concert for Southern Decadance as a precaution

Of course, we still need to know how well vaccines and antivirals work with monkeypox.

The NIH recently announced a clinical trial of Tpoxx (tecovirimat), a pox antiviral:

nih.gov/news-events/news-re...

Tpoxx (tecovirimat) is already approved for smallpox. The above article says:

"Clinicians currently can access tecovirimat for U.S. patients with monkeypox through an expanded access or “compassionate use” request process."

The NIH article provides a link for current access.
