W&W avoided second infection of Covid

In Oct 20, my Dad 77 and on w&w for 7 + years unfortunately got Covid pre vaccines. He was moderately ill, but thankfully fully recovered (my Mum got Covid too - but she does not have CLL).

After seeing my parents on Xmas day just gone my Mum discovered the next day she had Covid again! She then gave this to me as an Xmas present (I'm ok) and I was fully expecting my Dad to get it as they didn't isolate from each other and shared the same bed.

Miraculously he didn't get it, which I'm baffled about (he keeps testing). I can only assume after a 4th booster jab (which he only had a week before and a previous infection of Covid he had some (?) antibodies or T cells remembering. Just wanted to share as I found it fascinating that he didn't get infected this time round.

Hope everyone is keeping well.

Thanks for sharing. I also had covid (exactly a year ago, pre vaccine). I had it bad. I have had three jabs.

I was exposed a week before Christmas, one of my pupils tested positive. I am baffled that I did not catch it from him. He was right in my face for about 90min over the course of the day shouting out phonic sounds and reading words...

Not sure how that happened but I'm not complaining.

Let’s hope our vaccines work. You also potentially have the benefit of antibodies from your prior infection. I have two children in middle school and the school tested a large sample (75%) of kids yesterday and the prevalence of positive tests was high. Lots of kids were sent home thismorning when the results came back. We will have a summary of the testing results later in the week. I’m not sure how I’m going to avoid this much longer. It is literally everywhere. The only thing we can do is hang in there and hope it burns itself out soon.

If you told me five years ago I’d have blood cancer and be in the middle of a raging pandemic I’d have laughed uncontrollably. Unfortunately, this is what is called a black swan event.

Better days ahead.

Mark, I feel exactly the same about the "5-year thing" - I would think it is a really bad joke.

There's no way we can avoid that forever. Especially those of us with small kids / teenagers or even grandchildren...and working with people.

I'm grateful for the vaccines and other treatment options, praying it is available for everyone who needs it.

Mark,

what is a ‘black swan event ‘ I have missed that expression. I am the idiot that thought this would be over in three months, so what do I know about anything 🙄

Here you go 😁

The black swan theory or theory of black swan events is a metaphor that describes an event that comes as a surprise, has a major effect, and is often inappropriately rationalized after the fact with the benefit of hindsight. The term is based on an ancient saying that presumed black swans did not exist – a saying that became reinterpreted to teach a different lesson after the first European encounter with them.

Hmmm….Thank you Mark. I will stick with Swan lake.

I recommend this book to get properly acquainted with the whole Black swan thing. Nassim Taleb is one of the most intelligent guys that I ever read. Really eye-opening stuff. Not an easy read though.

Thank you but my days of intellectual reading are long over ( I just keep the books on the shelf to look clever ) I much prefer to be tucked up with a good murder now.Colette

I am reading a biography of Agatha Christie right now; she, Rex Stout, and "John Sandford" are my top 3 fave authors of murder books!

I haven’t read two of the mentioned but I have probably read everything Agatha Christie has written. Several years ago I rented the upstairs of her summerhouse Greenways in Devon, now owned by the National Trust. Imagine seeing several sites where some of the murders were committed. The boat house and the battery. And when the house was closed to the general public we had 60 acres of gardens to wander around.

Coco - I am SO envious!!! What a treat and fabulous experience that must have been!

I'm a Agatha Christie nut. I have read all of her novels (28 of them sit in my bookcase); have the Agatha Christie companion; Agatha Christie's grand tour; and her 'secret notebooks'...plus the complete set of DVDs for Sir David Suchet as Hercule Poirot (love the stage sets for his 1930s apartment) and my favorite Miss Marple was played by Joan Hickson - have the complete set of DVDs for that as well.

No matter how many times I read her books, I can still savor nuggests of insight Christie possessed when it came to human nature. And of course, there is the mystery!

Thank you for giving me the opportunity to reflect on something, which has provided me so much pleasure over the years.

PS - hope all is well with you, considering!

Diane yes it was amazing,

Years ago I saw a programme about the National Trust taking over the property and every so often I would check to see if they had opened booking. When they eventually did I booked a week and then had to find lots of friends to join me, luckily not a problem.

Agreed that Joan Hickson and David Suchet by far and away the best actors for the parts, and I believe Agatha saw Joan in a play and said she would be a perfect Miss Marple.

Thank you just about staying afloat considering the cases in London and several family testing positive, so Christmas was passing presents to each other from the front door.

Hope you and your husband are also staying well.

I understand the area where Greenways is located is quite beautiful, too. That's a memory to treasure.

We are taking precautions and staying low but it becoming very bad in our area. The more populated areas in our State seem to get served first when it comes to vaccines and antidotal medications and the positive cases have really shot up. This time the community I live in have had positive cases for the first time.

Hope this thing burns itself out or at least becomes less of a threat...soon!

Diane,

Yes amazing memories but sadly the photographs died with one of my many Blackberry phones. The grounds were beautiful with hydrangeas and the river at the bottom of the grounds with a ferry across.Hope this all improves soon, it is coming up to two years staying at home.

You and your husband stay safe.

I'm so sorry about the photographs, Coco. Thankfully, you had the experience and the memories but the photographs would have been nice to have. Love hydrangeas so I can imagine how beautiful it was.I hope this all improves soon, too. It seems like it has gone on forever, doesn't it? Ugh.

Please stay safe as well.

Diane,

One of the best photos, but luckily one I will never forget, was a local farmers cows that had escaped and were walking around the private garden and swimming pool ! I and two others were brave enough to go downstairs and try to head them out ! Life in the country 🤔

I certainly hope that is the case! And, if there is a way to get that information on record with Public Health Dept. and they will use it to benefit the use and worth of vaccinations, we can further hope the unvaxxed can see the value of getting the shots.

I’m glad your Dad is holding up. What kind of vaccines did he have?

Best,

As you may know, the virus can seem to be gone, yet reappear and have bad symptoms. I hope your Mother is doing okay--she may need to see a Dr. (age can also be a factor that allows for Monoclonal Antibody treatments to be administered--in a timely fashion, if that that hasn't passed.
