Suitability of 3 Current Vaccines for CLL 'ers

FairweatherSailor profile image

Just thought I would update on the advice which I have just got from my NHS consultant at Royal Marsden.

His view is that both Pfizer and Moderna are suitable and that the Astra Zeneca (Oxford) vaccine will also be suitable after it receives it's UK license .

He also felt it would be advisable to accept whichever vaccine of the 3 is offered first. (which is what he will be doing personally !)

I plan to follow his advice.

Thank you. That's very useful to know.

Those of us lucky enough to have listened to the CLL Support webinar earlier this week will have heard the messages that (a) none of the vaccines are live and (b) take the first one you are offered. This info came from Prof. Saul Faust of the University of Southampton, who has been a member of the NIHR COVID-19 vaccine trial delivery group. It was an interesting talk and worth watching when CLL Support post a link to it, if they haven’t already done so. Prof. Faust also gives an explanation of the 2 full doses vs .5 and full dose of the Oxford vaccine.

Thanks for your input on this most important current topic Sailor. I believe the key element of that decision is that none of them have any live virus in the vaccine. The one warning I've heard that we all should be aware of, is don't mess with the vaccine if you are a person with significant allergy issues.

There apparently is a question that I have not seen adequate input on yet, and that has to do with our ability to benefit from the vaccine. All of us to the best of my knowledge have significantly impaired immune systems, and the vaccine's goal is to stimulate our immune systems to make antibodies. I suppose there is still no harm to take it, and maybe it will produce antibodies for many of us; who knows. I was curious about the hope for Car T, because it sounds like the next great hope. Then I was advised some on this site that our T Cells are dysfunctional; thus, Car T doesnt currently work for us. If that is the case, then we have to wonder if a Vaccine will work for us; still, I'll take it.

Thanks, I have been wondering about this same thing. I put a call into my specialist and will learn what he wants his CLL patients to have when he decides.
