Wondering if anyone knows if it is safe to take probiotics while on ibrutinib. Specifically wondering about a kefir that’s has added probiotics after pasteurization

Hi I use a probiotic called VSL#3 which is approved by my haematologist while on ibrutinib. I was taking this prior to treatment. I don’t know about kefir. You would need to run it past your haematologist.

I drink Lifeway Plain Unsweetened Cultured Lowfat Kefir. It helps to keep me regular.

Thanks Win, have you been approved to drink this by your oncologist. Are you in treatment. I have used lifeway before treatment and am considered going back to it. But concerned about ibrutinib and probiotics

Yes I am in treatment with ibrutinib. My doctor told me to avoid grapefruit and Seville oranges. I read the food labels to check ingredients on everything I eat or drink. In addition to kefir, I also drink kombucha.

I have no problems with any probiotics I have used.

Kombucha ? Check around and ask your hematologist.

I was told by a cancer nutritionist not to eat fermented foods . I used to make my own kefir, kombucha and kimchi . She also told me not to eat ripe bananas as the brown spots are a type of fungus and I’m prone to fungal infections . Hope this info helps . All the best . Emer

Yogurt is the most reliable, beneficial and least controversial. I use non-fad, plain yogurt and drain the liquid until it seems like "farmers cheese", then add some organic "ranch dressing": The result is like imported cheese from Europe. (Take the lid off the container and turn container downside up over a collander for several days to drain liquid ).

I agree a good yogurt like Activia or my personal favourite which is Yakult which managed to keep my fungal infections at bay during pretty much non stop antibiotics for infections.
