Cataract Operation

Currently taking Imbrutinb and my bloods are good. Most operations require you abstain from taking Imbrutinb typically for seven days before and after the operation, Is this also required for a Cataract operation, as I believe no blood cells are involved. Other peoples experience/comments appreciated, cheers and thanks.

Hi I have had both eyes done while on ibrutinib. I had to stop before and after each opp.despite the surgeon saying it wasn’t necessary. Your consultant may think differently. I would ask.

I’m due to have the first of two cataract ops late Aug. As I’m temporarily off Ibrutinib it’s not an issue but as Ann says, it is required to stop it for a period as advised by your haematologist. In my case I’m also required to shield (totally self isolate) for 14 days prior to each procedure plus having Covid tests.

Good luck!

Hi fossicker,

-

My CLL expert doctor had me pause Ibrutinib for cataract surgery. When I asked why, the opthamologist explained that even though there are no blood vessels where they make the incision, they use an ultra sonic tool to dissolve the old lens for removal. That ultra sonic vibration can cause bleeding at the back of the eye, in the retina, so pausing is to prevent any damage.

Hi Fossiker,

I was told to stop ibrutinib for 3 days before and after cataract surgery. So I did that, though I’m aware that others have been told to stop for longer than 3 days.

The morning after my second cataract surgery, I woke to find that eye very red, with swollen bruised eyelids. Not sure why that should have happened. I looked like I'd been in a fight! I had been afraid of bleeding in the retina at the back of the eye (as lankisterguy mentioned), not in front of it!

I phoned the eye hospital and they said it would settle in time, and it did, with no lasting problems.

For cataract surgery, I was also told to go off Acalabrutinib 3 days before and after. However, for inguinal hernia surgery, I was told 7 days before and 7 days after.

I had cataract surgery about a month ago. The Ophthalmologist said there was no need to stop Ibrutinib before the surgery. All went well.

Six years here on ibrutinib & doing well. During this time, I've had cataracts removed from both eyes. I stopped ibrutinib for 2-3 days before & 1 day after. No problems. Wishing you well & great vision.
