Hiccups?

My husband's SLL did not respond adequately to Ibrutinib and he is being transitioned to Obinutuzumab infusions for 6 months and starting Venetoclax orally in a month. He just finished his first 2 high dose infusions as inpatient at the VA. He now has horrible hiccups. Has anyone else experienced this? How long do the hiccups last after an infusion? Has anyone found a good solution for hiccups yet? Thanks /Alexis

Ii have not had obinutuzumab infusions. So I don't know if those hiccups are worse. But I have always been able to solve any episode of hiccups by taking 13 tiny consecutive swallows of water without breathing. Works every time! Doesn't need to be big gulps.

I have never had the hiccups during treatment. That must be really annoying. 😞

I just had my 7th of 9 Obinutuzumab (Gazyva) infusions this past Friday. I am in my 3rd month of Venetroclax. I have been very fortunate to not have any side effects other than occasional nausea but that might be nerves.

Excellent news . Are they giving you any infusion before or after the infusions?

How long do the infusions last?

O plus V has had some amazing results no doubt and is becoming standard therapy

I am usually at the infusion center in the hospital about five hours. The first hour is prep time as they give me IV Benadryl and they let that take effect. Once the infusion starts with the Gazyva it’s about 4 hours. They also give me two Tylenol. I only had an allergic reaction in the first 10 minutes of the very 1st infusion therefore the Benadryl.

For me, they have not been bad. And my labs are great. Im hoping to keep on this positive treatment path.

That’s what I have heard once you get past the first infusion usually the rest are a lot more tolerable

Is it pretty much an IV?

I get hooked up to an IV with Saline and Benadryl , and then the Gazyva. The Benadryl makes me very loopy so I sleep.

I did not have Obinutuzumab infusions, but did gave B+R infusions. I had hic-cups following 1-3 treatments. Worse hic-cups lasted 5 days. Having hic-ups does not sound too bad, but when you have them for days it is very hard to sleep. I was never sure if the hic-cups were a result of pre-meds given before B+R or B+R. I suspect it was Rituxain. Doctors thought so too. Doctor tried everything they could think of including thorazine which is very heavy sedative. After 3rd treatment, I started continuing Tylenol and Benadryl for 24 hour after being released from infusion center. I think that helped as by 3rd treatment hic-cups were down to 1-3 hours duration. I found out later that hic-cups were not that uncommon after infusion treatments and wondered why they did not list hic-cups as a possible side effect of treatment. I guess they did not consider hic-cups bad if they don't last long time. I hope your husband fines relief. Blessings.

So sorry. No hiccups here...I am CLL/SLL, currently cycle 12 in a CT, with cycles 1-6 obinutuzumab, cycles 3-14 venetoclax & cycles 1-19

ibrutinib. Fortunately, have had very minimal side effects. Hope all goes well for husband. He is blessed to have you.

I had hiccups, "No", I had Super Hiccups after every obinutuzumab infusion until my oncologist re-approved my ARD meds. The hiccups would last for about three days after an infusion. I would have episodes that would continue for 1 - 2 hours and let up for 4 - 5 hours at a time.

I have advanced acid reflux disease, and they took me off of omepresole at the beginning of the infusions. I was put on ranitadine/zantac, which I tried to no avail for about 6 infusions. After a request to the trial admin, I was re-approved for omepesole. After resuming the omepresole, the hiccups only lasted part of a day following obinutuzumab. In addition, the hiccups were much less intense.

I underwent FCR treatment, and was prescribed Ondansetron for 5 days at the start of each treatment to combat nausea. One of the side effects I had to Ondansetron was occasional hiccups. The frequency was not too bothersome for me. Good luck.
