I was told today by my doctor not to go to the gym whilst this coronavirus is about. Has anyone else stopped going gym, to work ?
Are people going to gyms? : I was told today by... - CLL Support
Are people going to gyms?
You asked: "Has anyone else stopped going gym...?"
In most cities in the USA gyms, both public and private, have been ordered to close.
Why? Because of the prospect of the enhanced likelihood of Covid-19 transmission.
Logical, eh?
Caven
The gym I go in the UK is still open. Everybody is being really good and cleaning and wiping down equipment but the doctor was saying people with health problems it’s a huge risk.
Hope your well. Do you do workout at home?
Josh: The gym equipment may be wiped down well ... but the people are still huffing and puffing with greater than typical intensity.
Since it's likely (maybe even certain ...) that folks <can> be vectors for the virus long before they're symptomatic then no-one knows who is, and who is not, a carrier of the virus.
To take a stab at interpreting what your physician has said to you ... since by definition a person with CLL has a compromised immune system then the CLL person in a gym is unnecessarily dabbling in a potentially contaminated environment.
The answer? Exercise at home, on the local hiking trail, in a park ... the options are endless. The nature of the workout may need to change, but so long as you get to aerobic intensity then isn't the effect the same as at the gym? (but likely safer)
Best wishes, Caven
I Stoped going to the GYM because going to machines with a spray bottle and paper towel seemed a bad idea as I have had some skin infections
I was working out with a small group of 65 plus I know well at my community center BUT for right now with the escalating conditions I am just walking by myself until this is better understood as getting this seems pretty serious
It’s good your doing walks. I’m trying my best to walk as much and do plenty of stretches. Hope you have a lovely evening 🙏🏻
Our schools are shut down and most gyms are shutting down where we are - my gym is @ my husbands work so it is still open but I am not going - getting outside and walking about 3mi every day and doing some things @ Home via YouTube exercise videos — just don’t want to risk it.
Hi meamiaam10 yes I’ve been looking on YouTube for workouts and it’s a lot of fun. That’s brilliant your walking 3 miles a day. I’m slowly walking. I had a stoke in January and couldn’t move my left side of my body, slowly I got my movement back and I’m walking about. 😃 I hope your well and having a lovely day 🙏🏻☀️
Lucky for me I am new with CLL and right now as a 48yr old I still have good energy so I'm trying to work out as much as possible each week (5-6 times) to stay ahead of it. I am so sorry to hear about your stroke Praying this Covid-19 ends quickly -- this is such a trying time for so many!!
As a keen cyclist, I've always been amused at how people drive to the local gym, rather than cycling, walking or running, only to do those activities in the gym! We can do a lot to keep fit through incidental exercise and make do at home for some of the other gym based activities without special equipment and thereby avoid exposing ourselves to a greater risk of infections.
Neil
You should NOT go the gym. The virus is spread (we think) via droplets. A gym is loaded with them. If you have CLL you should probably be self-isolating.
Hi Josh
My gym in Suffolk closed on Monday, same day I ordered weights etc from amazon which were delivered yesterday. I am determined to keep some sort of routine going and aim to set aside an hour each day to continue exercising, well that’s plan A anyway!!
Shooey
Yes
Gonna have to join the non-gym goers for the time being. Not so good for fighting the fatigue so walking, etc for me.
Hi, I stopped going to the gym YEARS ago...just kidding. I prefer to be outdoors for my exercise. At any rate, just saying hello and siding with all the folks who agree you should find alternative methods of activity.
By the way, are you in watch and wait on your CLL? Welcome to the community!
~Lisa
Hi Lisa, yes definitely outdoor exercise is more fun and I feel more peaceful outdoors then in a gym.
The doctors keep check on my CLL every week. It’s been like this over 6 years I’ve been having lots of problems with treatments infections. I’ve been on venetoclax for 6 months and seeing positive signs now with CLL. I’ve had lots of problems with that tablet but it looks like it’s settling down now with infections. 🙏🏻😊
Definitely not. Switched my routine to at home video supported work outs. My gym also closed after my decision so I would have had to stop anyways.
All gyms are closed here for good reason. difficult to clean etc
Sadly yes. I was in hospital a few weeks ago, and I am having Cardio Rehab. I went to for my assessment recently, and the physio said that I would be ok to take the information pack and work with my personal trainer. Which I am doing. I see him every week, and previously to becoming ill, I had visited the gym often - sometimes daily. Yesterday we were supposed to be getting me out into the full gym (he has his own small studio within the gym). He has two children, one of whom is 8, the other is a teenager. I chose not to go. We have talked about ways I can increase the work I am doing, at home. Next week will have a Skype session. I will go into the cellar and see what gym type equipment our daughters left behind when they moved out. I was considering get a turbo-charger for my husband's mountain bike. But long distance cycling daughter says they aren't great, and they wobble a lot and ruin the tyres. I am VERY VERY frustrated. I woke up this morning thinking how nice a swim would be. I would love to know what other things people are doing. I don't walk, after a spinal injury years ago. So if I go out, it is on a scooter.
Hi blowinginthewind,
I’ve started this post for people to discuss what they’re doing and how they’re managing their day. Exercise and resisting over-eating will be an issue for many of us stuck at home I’d imagine.

Hi, your doing absolutely great and you should like a determined and positive person. You really inspiring me🙏🏻😊 i watch a lot of YouTube workouts and that’s really helping me. I do walk outside, just not far as in January I had a stoke and my left side stopped working. But slowly I’m able to move about. I’m just weak in my body. I know if I keep practising every day my strength will come back😊 I hope your having a lovely day and treatment is going well 🙏🏻
Hi I’m a Personal Trainer and I’m not going into any gym as of now. I’m working on doing virtual workouts with clients. There are many bodyweight only workouts on the web. Also getting and using a TRX to use at home or outside is a great option. In my humble opinion this is one of the best exercise tools that’s easy to use even in a small place
