How sorry I am to hear this but so glad Martyn had more time than he’d initially expected.

I’d spoken to him privately and publicly on the site and he was clearly a lovely man who idolised his family.

My thoughts are with you all.

MartyR and I exchanged some scripture before that gives me confidence that he is in glory and would tell all of us that truly as Ecclesiastes 7:1 from the Old testament says.... "better...the day of death than the day of one's birth."

I have been following him on this site for many years and will see and speak to him again. Yet that does not remove the present pain of his lost.

I am so saddened to hear this news. 💔 Your family is in our thoughts and prayers. I was happy to call him my brother in the faith . He was truly encouraging. His faith was strong and an encouragement to many. We are heartbroken and yet thankful he shared his hope found Revelation 21:3-5 and Psalm 37:29. May the God of all comfort wrap his arms of comfort around you at this sad time. ❤️

Sorry to hear, Condolences.

Dearest Martyn’s family,

I am devastated though not surprised to hear the news.

Martyn was my friend, though we never met in person. He was a source of inspiration and information. I will miss him forever.

I would like to share my last private message with him to you. I feel he would have wanted you to know things that perhaps he couldn’t share at that time.

Jeff

“Marty,

How’s life treating you lately. I miss your insights on the forum. I started on ibrutinib. So far so meh, but hanging in there.

Hey Jeff,

Thanks for your note and it’s nice to hear that you appear to be in good spirits and still taking the tablets... Before I replied to you I “googled” the pictures of the Caucasus Mountains and just imagined what living in your log cabin must be like - this time of year. The scenery must be amazing and the air must be so crisp and fresh. (Rather than the British polluted, foggy, contaminated, air.)

Anyway as my couple of posts recently - (When the CLL Treatment Finishes.) - I’ve gone past my Consultant’s prognosis of six months from early March, with my general blood levels being stable - except for my WBC which is gradually increasing without any CLL Treatment. I have been offered Venetolax but the procedures, hospitalisation, and risks to me are outweighed by the the quality of life - cuddling and playing my grandkids, hugging my wife and daughters and just standing up to what comes next....

My consultant has put me on a course of Predisolone and I have the “Respect Form” signed and in place. Which gives us the comfort that my family and I need.

I will see my Consultant in a couple of weeks - making it 9 months - with the main change being TIREDNESS - but I’ve been be able to do a number of things from my “Bucket List” - Attending British Grand Prix (F1), Rock Concert with a Queen Tribute Group, Various Car Museums, Long weekends away with my wonderful Wife, Steam Train Trips........ generally just enjoying life - one day at a time.

Jeff, I know we have so much in common looking at your profile - a devoted wife who understands our disease, both having been on the B+R+Idelaslisib / placebo trial, remissions, - and still we fight on .....

So what’s new with you - how’s the Ibrutinib working... (this has never been on my drug list - because a known side effect is skin / rash - and I’ve always suffered from Eczema.)

Best regards,

Martyn. (Age 67)

RIP my friend. 😇

Really sad to read this. It is perhaps worth stressing however for the new folks around here that he was diagnosed back in 2001 - full nineteen years ago and had quite an aggressive illness (in that he needed treatment straight away). He was also treated with chloramabucil initially and later with other forms of chemo. And by the time it was possible for him to receive the newer agents he just felt that he was too unwell to do that. But nineteen years with a CLL which needed treatment straight away on the basis of older treatments should help us to see that long life with this condition really is possible. Those who go before us like him have helped doctors figure out the best way to treat us so we owe them a great debt. As well of course as the huge contribution he made on here before many of us newbies had even a clue what CLL stood for.

It is always too early when someone leaves us. And it’s only right that it hurts. Marty had a faith that helped him hugely through all this, and firmly believed that he would now be in a better place.

People sometimes say this site is full of bad news and difficult times, but there is also good news too. And I hope that some of Marty’s old hope filled comments will continue to inspire future generations of CLL patients when they stumble on them here.

Dear Family of Martyn,

I was very sad to hear the news of Marty’s passing away. My deepest condolences to you all. It was good of you to take the trouble to let us know.

We knew Marty was expecting this, but he kept a wonderfully positive attitude through it all. It was clear that his faith made all the difference to him and that was an inspiration to me, as I’m sure it was to many others.

Wishing you solace in happy memories, as you work through your loss and grief.
