Dog Vaccinations

For those of us with compromised immune systems should we be cautious around a puppy that has just received its vaccinations of DHPPi and Lepto?

DHPPi is a LIVE, attenuated, freeze dried, virus vaccine containing canine distemper virus, canine adenovirus-2 (CAV2), canine parvovirus and canine parainfluenza virus, grown in cell line tissue culture.

Lepto is Inactivated, bacterial vaccine containing a liquid suspension of Leptospira interrogans serogroups Canicola.

I believe Lepto is fine as it's not live, however the DHPPI is live, but attenuated.

This is a good question.

vetinfo.com/is-distemper-in...

"Distemper is closely linked with the measles virus in humans. The two diseases are so similar, in fact, that it is speculated by medical historians and pathologists that the measles virus may have mutated at some point and spread to dogs. Because of this close link between the two, human beings can be infected with the canine distemper virus. However, an important thing to note is that, while the virus can successfully replicate in the human system, it produces no illness and no symptoms."

Thank you for the useful information. Just now leaving home to pick the puppy up. Had vaccinations on Friday.

No need to worry. The puppy won’t be shedding live virus anyway. None of the diseases are communicable to humans anyway. I practiced veterinary medicine for about 15 years with CLL before and after treatments. Had FCR and then was on Ibrutinib for the last 5 years before retiring. Never a problem. Enjoy that puppy.

Thanks Dahila,

As we just got a new pup, your post is reassuring to me because of your background. Also, thanks to the original poster for raising the question.

Picked up the new puppy today. Reassuring to know. Currently on Ibruitnib, so will be cautious.

What a relief to read your response. Thank you for taking the time to weigh in on this. I want a new dog in the worst way. CLL feels like a prison sometimes.

I raised this issue a few months ago.

I received this reply from my CLL consultant ( via specialist nurse):

“She should avoid direct contact with the vaccine. She should also avoid direct contact with the dog for 48 hours, esp licking and with eyes and nose. She should not be in the same room when the dog is being vaccinated just in case, it is squirted into the air (intranasal application), and she inhales it.

The Bordetella species that causes Kennel Cough can cause airway infection in humans. Of course, one would treat this with antibiotics and that would hopefully work but better to avoid infections.”

My Local Vet displays a notice in the waiting room asking anyone with compromised immune systems to make their Vet aware.

Compared to the benefits of dog therapy this seems like a minor inconvenience! Enjoy your puppy!

Very happy to see this post! Recently lost our 17 year old JRT (had him since a pup), and have some concerns about getting a new pet to love. Thank you all so much for the very helpful info! Just what I was searching for! ~ xo
