Hair Loss
I did not experience hair loss with my anemia, but my anemia did not last very long. My hemoglobin recovered rapidly once I started treatment.
Its the iron deficiency associated with anemia that I think is the culprit in hair loss. You might want to talk to your doctor about iron supplements and incorporating more iron rich foods in your diet. That of course, and any treatment you might need which might resolve your anemia. I don't think anemia related hair loss is permanent, but I am no expert on it, just recollecting what I read when my hemoglobin crashed.
Thanks for this, I've only just realised that anaemia could be the culprit, I'm seeing my Dr so I will discuss it with him. I know some would say 'it's the least of your troubles' but it upsets me.
Sometimes "the least of our troubles" are the ones that make bigger issues more real.
I too am experiencing hair loss. On Friday Doc. said I was iron deficient and put me on iron tablets every other day.
Yes. It started to fall out and I have struggled to take iron medication due to it causing stomach problems. Eventually my hairdresser refused to colour my hair so have now let it go grey!
Netty
I have iron deficiency anemia and lost so much hair. It fell out everyday in clumps. I let my hair go gray only because I was so tired I couldn’t even deal with it. New hair has grown in even though I am still iron deficient. I have had several infusions of ferritin six months apart because the iron pills were torturous. The new hair has a lot of body. As a single woman of seventy-five years old I must say that men don’t make passes at women with grey hair.
There is a phenomenon called telogen effluvium - it’s usually temporary - often caused by trauma or stress. After an ICU admission April 2016, my hair loss started beginning of June 2016. In the same way, I found it really, really unsettling. Thankfully, it grew back but even though I was having regular chest & lung drains & suctions that were a disgusting experience, I was having lumber punctures, BMB’s, struggling with complete muscle waste, myopathy, neuropathy, glandular fever, ARDS, double pneumonia, ravages of flu & discovering I had CLL - hair loss was still the single most upsetting thing!!! Weird huh? 😀
