Persistent cough

Hi after seeing the consultant for my husband's 6monthly check all bloods are good. He examined him for any enlarged lymph nodes none found so all looks good. He has had a cough for 6wks I'm concerned about this and would like him to go to the GP, but he doesn't want to because feels ok and feels it is too related to the chest infection he had just after Christmas (consultant said his chest was clear) he is 30 months post-FCR. Any thoughts folks.

thanks,

My wife, who doesn't have CLL, had a persistent cough and visited the doctor, It took about five years to eventually come up with a (correct) diagnosis. I can completely sympathise with your husband that he doesn't want to have that kind of long term contact with medics post FCR - one very much wants to just get on with life. However, there is a possibility of lung cancer, so he must get it checked out. It is much more likely to be acid reflux, an infection, or even a new allergy. It could even be silent asthma. Make it clear to him that his cough impinges on you, even if he doesn't care about himself!

Take care,

John

I had a really persistent & debilitating cough for over a month - got a spike in temperature for an hour once - pretty sure it was viral saw GP, haematologist etc etc - couldn’t really treat it. A cough medicine, honey lemon & lozenges were the only thing that made a difference & that was small. Saying that, I get everything checked if it is persistent.

Hi Jenny,

I live in London and I know several, otherwise healthy, friends who have had a persistent cough recently. But in saying that my surgery has one of those posters asking patients with a cough to see the GP. But much safer to get your husband checked out.

Totally unscientific, but I find letting a square of good quality dark chocolate melt in my mouth helps.

Regards

Colette

Best to get it checked out due to his past issues. I too had a strange cough and after a CAT that checked things out it was determined to be a side effect of my blood pressure med...just saying. Plus this time of the year there are many other things that could produce a cough. But we need to keep a check on things! ☘️☘️☘️

Has he had his IGG levels checked?

Doctors don’t always check these, ask, it could be they are low, the reason for getting constant infections.

Good luck,feel better

I to have had a persistent cough after a chest infection and Pneumonia a few weeks back. If in the UK, then I don't think mine will clear up until the weather improves. Do take care, Regards Eric.

Many CLL patients see odd lung infections that are viral or fungal, so please ask for thorough swab sample testing of those possibilities. Just listening with a stethoscope or even a x-ray cannot reliably eliminate those type of infections.

Dr Furman had me taking a prophylactic medicine Atovaquone to prevent my contracting Pneumocystis. Here is what Wikipedia says it is: Pneumocystis pneumonia (PCP) is a form of pneumonia, caused by the yeast-like fungus Pneumocystis jirovecii. Pneumocystis pneumonia is not commonly found in the lungs of healthy people, but, being a source of opportunistic infection, it can cause a lung infection in people with a weak immune system. Pneumocystis pneumonia is especially seen in people with cancer undergoing chemotherapy, HIV/AIDS, and the use of medications that suppress the immune system.

My husband, diagnosed last year, has a persistent cough but it appears to be the result of nasal drip down into the back of his throat. He has had chest X-ray and that was fine he currently has nose spray but it doesn't seem to help much, used to think it might be the BP meds however due to wait loss he no longer has to take medication so he just lives with it.

My husband also uses nasal drops so that could be the problem. Still, want him to go to the GP.

Thanks, Jenny UK

You may have the "100day cough", aka Whooping Cough. My cough began in early November and has just receded in the last week. It took three doctors to finally get it right. You might want to ask about it. I understand it's going around.

Sometimes a "persistent cough" is a side effect of a medicine you might be on. For instance, hypertensive medicines are known for this. Please don't think it's the worst scenario, there are a lot of variables and possibilities. Best to let a professional evaluate it. Hope to you and your family and that it resolves without too much ado.

People with certain kinds of heart issues often have persistent coughs, so do not rule that out.

Good Luck,
