Hi Blallen,

I believe if you searched our archives you would find that some CLL expert doctors and clinical trials strongly discourage alcohol during early stages of any treatments for CLL. The common thinking is that CLL treatments put extra stress on your liver, as does any alcohol.

When I had rituxan infusions or the ramp up of Venetoclax- both with potential for Tumor Lysis Syndrome- alcohol and anything that put extra load on the liver or kidneys was discouraged.

Other doctors say that in moderation, alcohol is ok, as long as you are not going through a significant reduction in CLL cells.

Keeping fit, maintaining a healthy weight and eating a balanced diet is also encouraged at all times with CLL.

My husband has been on Ibrutinib for 4 years, all blood results now in normal range. He still has a pint or two, mostly weekends and enjoys a few glasses of wine most nights. He has never been told alcohol was a no, no. A liver test recently was also normal. Relax and enjoy a beer if that's your tipple.

No alcohol for the first 2 months as your liver and kidneys are working overtime getting rid of the bodies. Then its OK, but dont go wild and drink a bottle of vodka in a night. My doctor said 2 pints night a night.

You might find that the increase in indigestion effects that can come with taking Ibrutinib are exacerbated by alcohol. This is the case with me and is particularly so with beer, with which I have had a very long and happy relationship with. Mike

I agree with the other folks. My pharmacy specifically said no alcohol for first 2-3 months on Imbruvica until I see how it affects my body. One reason was to be sure that any side effects were not related to alcohol.
