Hi has anyone taken anything particularly Manuka honey to help with low neutrophil ??? Or any ideas as how to get levels up as it’s delaying 2nd round FCR for my husband
Manuka Honey : Hi has anyone taken anything... - CLL Support
Manuka Honey
Be very careful of honey, it must be pasteurized.. raw honey of any kind is a big NO for neutropenia CLL
You husband should discuss the use of a G-CSF, like Neulasta, neuprogen etc...
Short delays in treatment are not uncommon... Rituxan is still working... the F and C have left the building...

Only yesterday, after my daughter gave me a lovey gift of two different kinds of raw honey, did I look it up and find I shouldn't be taking it! Very disappointing. However, I am not neutropenic. Would it be OK for me to eat raw honey as long as my WBC is normal?
I wouldn't risk it.. your immune system is still compromised and you are on treatment...
Your numbers can look great, but things can go sideways quite rapidly as I have learned...

Thanks. Disappointing, as my daughter knows I love honey and was trying to give me different honeys from different flowers. Honey is one food I would never have thought of as having an issue for us. I will stick to the pasteurized, grocery store types. Sigh...
Thanks
Hi Sailormoon
I’ve used Manuka honey for over 18 months up until recently and it’s very good for killing bacteria and many other benefits, heed chris warning though it must be pasteurised.
When purchasing Manuka it must be umf certified and the higher the number the stronger and better the properties, it is very e pensive but definitely worth the purchase
Can I ask why you stopped ?? Also could you give me the name of the one you used ? Thank you x
I only stopped as I haven’t got round to stocking back up but that’s on my to do list today. The brand I use is comvita umf 15, it’s usually £50 from a store called Holland and Barrett in the U.K but it’s on sale at £33 this week.
It’s definitely an acquired taste but the benefits far outweigh that, I usually take it spread on toast in the morning but you can just consume a small spoon full.
Hope this helps
Stuart
And this is def pasteurised
Commercial products usually are pasteurised, it usually states when raw as to those with good functioning immune system raw honey holds a lot more benefits, I’ve used this product before and during treatment up until about a few weeks back and I’m going to purchase some more today, for peace of mind you can always ask in store or contact the supplier directly.
Hope this help
Stuart
In the US Costco sell 1 kg for about $30, if I remember. That is a lot of honey.
It is a decent anti-biotic as a topical ointment. A friend had a very infected wound that was not responding to prescription anti-biotics. He found out about 2 kinds of honey that work well on wounds. Manuka is one. With honey, his wound cleared.
I tried some last week on an itchy mosquito bite reaction just as an experiment. My rash and itch was gone the next morning.
I agree to be careful with any honey. My wife has been dealing with CLL for 18 years. A few years ago I read an article about honey boosting B cells in the blood. Believe it or not even after all this time I have not studied enough about CLL to know if it is always the same kind of cell that is malignant in the illness. But I do know my wife’s cll has to do with B cells so we have been careful about her eating any honey.
I do have some knowledge with “natural” and alternative treatments. If you pasteurize the honey you lose the medicinal properties. And with Manuka (which I personally use) it must be 15 umf or higher or it isn’t considered medicinal. Also the brand is very important. There is lots of manuka sold without proof of certification.
We tried a jar of Manuka honey - tasted bad to us - threw it away.
Do you feel it def helps you
I looked up on internet and as a result ate lots of beans - cooked kidney and butter beans in casseroles, also fresh cooked green beans. Had some form of beans each day. My neutrophils went up from 1.1 to 5 in a week. Also had vit c + iron each day. Don’t know if anyone else has tried that?
